Topic: Need Gene Cafe mentor (10 msgs / 206 lines)
1) From: Steve Carlson
Hi, this is my first post to the list. I recently got a Gene Cafe roaster,
which I love, love, love. I get great coffee out of it, but I'm sure I can
get it even better with further experimentation. If you have particularly
good success with the Gene Cafe, I would really like to talk to you to
figure out how to maximize my roasts.
I have been setting the temp to the max (482) until about the first crack,
then dropping the temperature to about 460 for the duration of the roast,
usually to the start of the second crack. I've started playing around with
lighter roasts, especially with the Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe. I don't have
much of an understanding on ways to manipulate the temperature otherwise. I
also don't have a good feel as to when I'm hitting City, City+, FC, FC+,
etc.
I've taken a liking to Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe, Yemen Mokha Mattari, Purple
Mountain Kona, and Sulawesi, but I've just started out.
If you have a good handle on the Gene Cafe, please let me know. Maybe we
can talk in real time.
Thanks,
Steve Carlson

Hi Steve,
Feel free to drop me a note, post on-list, and/or check out my blog (
scottoscoffeeandtea.blogspot.com), which has some Gene Cafe Profiles. It is
a great machine that can produce phenomenal coffee. There are some other
listers who are Gene-proficient as well.

Hey Steve, welcome to the list. There are a couple of folks who love their
genes on the list. I'm pretty excited about arriving home I'm gonna roast
some Yirg... yum! I think I'll side-by-side compare the Yirga Cheffe Konga
and this Organic stuff that Tom is offering. The Konga is from February.
Anyway, welcome to the list and to homeroasting. enjoy the roasting!!

Is it on your site somewhere Eddie? I can't find it.

Scotto, this is great. Are all these profiles on the Gene Cafe? I am going
to give these a whirl.

Yep - all Gene Cafe. At the moment I am trying to clarify what beans work
well with what profiles based on my experience and get them into some simple
format, as well as attempt to explain the "why"s based on my completely
uneducated theories.
If you want real roast profile expertise, the Big Cheese is here and
listening, but often these things are hard to translate into home-scale
roasters. Of course, the fun is in playing around!

Peter,
Thank you for the kind words ...
It should be there now under "Product Reviews." The copies of the
review on the blog and at Homeroasters.org have pictures ... there was
no way to include pictures in the CoffeeGeek review.
Let us know how we can help, Steve.

Eddie -- Thanks to you and the rest of the community. I am now awash in
advice. I'm going to load up on some more beans (esp. Ethiopian) and play
around with some of these new roasting profiles.
