Mike - thanks for putting the link here. I think helping in *any *way is
really good. Sometimes problems of the world seem so overwhelming; this is
an easy way to help.

This is a report on the secretary of state of Washington's web site
for this charity, how much money they raise and how much money is
donated to charity by the organzation from various sources including
direct contributions, royalties from sales on their stores, and
revenues from click advertising.http://www.secstate.wa.gov/Charities/search_detail_cfr.aspx?cfr_id823

Whoa! They contribute a whopping *16%!!* Crap!
Feels like you can't trust anyone these days... well, at least I only spent
some clicks. I'd feel worse if it was my hard-earned money (if I had any
left over after bills, lol)
There doesn't seem to be a way to search w/out knowing the names of
organizations on that site - I'd like to find orgs that are decent.
Somewhere in the back of this very full (and aging, lol) mind I seem to
remember seeing a website that reported nonprofits like this.

Read and digest the entire report including the solicitation comments before
jumping to conclusions.
100% of direct donations went to charity with zero deducted for admin or
even credit card clearing which are legitimate expenses. An additional $1.2
million went to charities from Charity Royalties on purchases of hard goods,
hard goods purchased from various Fair Trade and Artisan Coops from over 80
countries. CharityUSA.com, LLC is also one of the largest U.S. importers of
fair-trade artisan products made by rural peoples from areas of conflict and
poverty. Should the Third World producers of these goods not be paid? The
total of $1.7 million that went to charities was 7 times the after tax
profits from said sales. And you bet there are expenses involved in moving
and selling and delivering products. Oh yeah, copious taxes paid to various
Government money grubbing agencies right here in the good 'ol US of A. taken
from the supposed "total contributions" in the Washington Secretary of State
Report. Charities receiving that $1.7 million in 2007 paid no fund raising
expenses. That $1.7 million that went to charities cost you and me what,
some time daily clicking? Sure in the grand scheme of things that $1.7mil
was a pittance, but a pittance hugely appreciated by the recipients I'd
wager.
Please Louise give me a break! How lazy can people be. Even if only 16% of
total revenue generated goes to charity (as opposed to actual contributions)
what the hell does it cost YOU. If you buy something from one of the Sponsor
sites do really expect 100% of that sale to go directly to charity without
even covering the cost of the goods etc.? Have some common sense.
No wonder some people brew bitter coffee and blame their brewing apparatus,
indeed no common sense.
I ain't no bleeding heart liberal, but I believe in doing what I can for my
fellow travelers in this Journey of Life. If I can make time to click for
charities to help out as best I can, the vast majority of you sure as hell
can. Post one less OT message to make the time or whatever.
If you know of some better way to help please post on, in the mean time shut
the F_P(*& up.
Yeah, I'm tired and cranky. And yeah I clicked through all the tabs again
today, and will again tomorrow.
Oh, and often after a 12+ hr day I find myself taking the flippin' time to
drive leftovers over to a shelter before going home.
What have you done to help your fellow man lately? Put up or shut up.
End Rant...

You are right - it doesn't cost us anything. I'll continue to click.

but I'm made different.. still - be careful. We don't want to find out that

Lynne, I'm glad you weren't offended by my Rant.
Gotta another one for ya'll who may think that charitable enterprise is a
bunch of skammers: How many of YOU donated 16% of your Gross Income to
charity? (16% of your income before taxes or any other deductions)
If you can answer yes then by all means judge the charity based that
(seemingly to me skewed) report.

I elect to judge charitable hawkers on grounds of my own choosing.

*When companies exist to solicit charitable contributions, who pays their
commission?
Sure, you feel good that you donated, and if that's all it takes to
contribute to your good feeling, it's a symbiotic relationship.
How many of YOU donated 84% of your Gross Income (GROSS?) to a solicitor's
phone room and supervisor's office, dreck coffee machine and executive
assistant? Any imbecile can assume the role of an indefatigable jackass and
grind you down.
The solicitor "earned" 10 cents. His boss and the charity split 90 cents. It
would be pretty primary to suggest mapping that money flow, especially when
the charity hasn't yet seen any of the funds requested in its name.

I just wanted to pipe in and remind people to support the folks working
in their local communities as well. I work for a smallish
not-for-profit, the Canadian Mental Health Association of Central
Alberta, and we're always trying to deliver a dollars worth of value for
a dime. Until last month, I worked as a case manager, driving 100-150
(work) clicks a week with a $25/month gas allowance. Other agencies in
our city--and yours I bet--are in the same boat.
Now I work in the office, not much in the way of travel, but I buy
computer software and needed supplies myself. We all do.
