Stan,
I'm curious what techniques you plan to use. I'm not involved in this
type of work, but I'm an analytical chemist, and this sort of
analytical challenge is always interesting to me.

(we can discuss off-list if analytical geekery is boring to everyone else)

Ya gotta discuss it on list. There are several chemistry geeks
here, even one Alchemist.

OK. It would involve the use of several stable isotopes to evaluate the
relationship between different geographic variables.
The isotopes are; C,N,O,H,and Sr and possibly some others. We analyze then
on either isotope ratio MS or a plasma source multi collector.
Our pilot test was done with several coffees from all over the. You can see
distinct differences. We hope to apply it to lots of different problems,
mostly trying to trace ag products to their origins.
Yes we did roast coffee in a fume hood to do parts of the initials tests.

I'll make a guess that the technique involves mass spectrometry and
isotope profiles.

Stable isotope ratios to be exact.
