I have never been satisfied with melitta and gold mesh filters for single
cups. For one thing, the coffee has lost too much heat by the time it
finally drips through and for another the flavor often seems week for a
single cup. 
My method is to steep the coffee and water together and thin pour it through
a kitchen sieve, which is quite coarse compared to any coffee filter I've
seen. The coffee goes through quickly enough to be hot and some of those
precious fines also escape to add a little flare to the cup. 
I think of it as a civilized form of camp coffee.
