Topic: Coffee and Ham radio (12 msgs / 250 lines)
1) From: Bob Brashear
Second year in a row I've supplied the coffee (and it was sorely needed)
for our clubs Field Day event (24 hour radio operations on a remote site
with back-up emergency power).
Sumatra Blue Batak Peaberry, Nicaragua Pacamera Peaberry, Brazil Poco
Fundo and Java WP Decaf. The Sumatra and Brazil went fast. I think the
Nicaragua was too unusual for the elder gentlemen that make up most of
the club membership.
I also organized the whole event for the club as to site, equipment and
the teardown feed (prime rib sandwiches with a bourbon sauce and
sundries. ok, so we weren't THAT remote). Between that and the coffee, I
think I'm the club Field Day organizer from now on. Thank the gods it
only happens once a year.
For those Hams out there, we had close to 500 contacts on two rigs
(FT-840's) using a folded dipole and an off-set feed windom, both
sloping from a 190 foot tower. Covered 80/40/20/15 and 10 meters.
Towards the end, a computer logging program blew up and we lost use of
one rig for the last hour (no way to check for duplicate contacts).
Good coffee, good friends and a good time. Kinda goes together.

Excellent. I unfortunately have been too busy to participate in Field
Day this year, but hopefully I will someday be providing our club
with homeroast & espresso to twitch CW that much faster :) We've got
a 5A group, K4LRG. Look for us in the rankings in QST :) Fun fun :)

I am surprised that some enterprising ham/homeroaster hasn't figured out how
to roast on top of an old transmitter (811's would probably do the trick!)

Hmmm. Got an old Swan 500C. Hybrid Vacc tube/transistor transceiver. I
wonder if the power supply could do the job.

How about my high school Tesla coil? 1mhz Hartley oscillator for primary
using a pair of 833A triodes in parallel. 10v, 20a for the two filaments!
With the oscillator tuned down around 827khz, the natural resonance of the
secondary, the violet corona streamers were nearly 1 meter long and they'd
follow you around if you were within several feet of the secondary terminal.
Then there was the incredible amount of Ozone (O3) it generated. If the rf
energy could be used to roast the coffee, the Ozone could instantly stale
it.
Doing my part to augment the Ozone layer- and cancel out radio, TV and
telephone on the block in Peoria.
Cheers, Mabuhay, 73 -RayO, aka Opa!
The FCC 1st class commercial license would prevent me firing up the Tesla
coil now...

Not enough heat out of my present setup to do much good. Elecraft K2,
beautifully assembled (if I do say so).

Unless there's one heckuva band opening on 2 meters I'll have to pass.
