Topic: OT: Grits, was OT: Zojirushi rice cooker (37 lines)
1) From: Brian Kamnetz
I made grits yesterday for my sister and brother-in-law and niece (age
5) and nephew (age 4). The niece and nephew declined. My sister has a
small slow cooker she got at Walmart for $5 last christmas. I plugged
in the slow cooker on high and got the 4 cups of water boiling on the
stove. I dumped the boiling water into the slow cooker and added the 1
cup of grits (half yellow, half white here in the north, half yeller,
half whaat in the South). I can see why the slow cooker was only $5;
it never did get anything boiling again, but that was probably for the
best. I cooked the grits somewhere at sub-boil for 6 hours. They were
great! Adluh's is the only grits I've had, but I like them plain. My
sister and brother-in-law liked them too, and both had seconds on the
grits to go along with the brats.
I have had Adluh's grits in the restaurant across the street from
Adluh's in Columbia, but they were hardly recognizable as grits. In
that case the grits was sort of an excuse to eat shrimp in lots of
cheese melted into a milk sauce, though "they was tasty".
So, to get back to the previous OT discussion, if I were going to be
available to stand around and watch the grits cook I would just get
one of the little $5 crock pots (my sister says they are usually $7,
but she got hers on sale), but since I want them to cook while I am at
work, and also because maybe I might want to make rice sometime, and
because I'm just itching for a new gadget, I would really like to get
a Zojirushi rice cooker. It may be a while, but if/when I do get one I
will try cooking grits in it and will let you know what happens.
