Some are, some are not. Depends on where the particular Civet eats.

You know, I might try Jacu bird, but for me to drink something that
had passed through the digestive tract of a mammal (especially one
with scent glands at the end of said tract), it would have to be a
pretty !@#$ing amazing cup of coffee.

We can rest assured that when Tom offers Kopi Luwak it will be from
naturally shaded, high grown, perfectly ripened cherries; offered free
choice to hybred palm civets; eaten, pooped and hand gathered under only the
best of conditions in fourth generation small family farm co-operatives.
I'm looking forward to the beautiful post card with my next order!

Partly true Paul. I think the big issue is this: Is the civet given
the opportunity to chose his/her diet, or due to their rural
isolation, are they forced to eat coffee cherry by a lack of choice,
which ultimately ends up as a limitation on their "life-chances". If
the civet is exposed to a wider range of foods, ones native to the
diet but perhaps available only to the civet cats over the next
ridge, or across the river, and they freely choose to eat coffee
cherry, I will support it. It's all about what the civet wants.
Okay, I jest.
Then again, can you imagine in a country where the price paid for
coffee cherry is $1/lb. that you can create a product worth 100x
that. If it is ever even eaten my a feline, how great is the
temptation to force feed them and increase yield. Or to cage them and
force feed so you don't have to run around and find their turds.
Pretty great, I would guesstimate. It's a situation ripe for some
pretty serious animal cruelty. I wish people would just ignore the
stuff, but it's such a sensational story ...
