Topic: News story on local coffee shops surviving (10 msgs / 236 lines)
1) From: Jim Gundlach
Here is a link to a news story showing that a couple of local
homegrown coffee shops have survived the effort by Starbucks to take
over their business by moving in right next to the existing local
coffee shop.

Glad to hear O'Henry's is still thriving!
There are 2 *$ stores in our small town. The one on the university campus
always has a line of a dozen or more people. The newly built store at the
shopping mall is not doing so well. A friend who works there tells me the
manager let staff know to be prepared for a possible loss of work... didn't
say it was a sure thing, but that it could happen.
When I moved here a little over 4 years ago, there was one (really awful)
shop in town. In the last 2 years, four new shops plus the two *$ locations
have opened. Two of the newly opened shops have closed.
cheers,
Scott

hey all,
i suppose its time i introduce myself. i've been "lurking" on the list for=
a couple of months now, really enjoying the topics and conversations. tho=
ugh some have been over my head, i now have a long wish-list of coffees i n=
eed to get next.
anyway, i'm 22yrs old and reside in birmingham, al. have been roasting for=
over a year now. started out with the i-roast2 and switched to the behmo=
r and have logged over 80 roasts on it since march. i have a cuisinart gri=
nder that i enjoy greatly. so Pecan Jim, thanks for the link to the story =
about O'henry's and Lucy's coffee and tea outlasting starbucks. randy adam=
y the owner/roastmaster of o'henry's was the first real contact i made when=
my thirst for knowledge had taken me outside of sweet marias. he's a grea=
t guy and a good roasting coach. anyway, wanted to take the time to say he=
llo and thank everyone who contributes regularly. i don't feel i have much=
to contribute to most conversations but LOVE reading them.
roast on friends!

Michael,

I'm down about halfway between Montgomery and Auburn about four miles
south of I-85. We do make it up B'ham way fairly regularly though. I
haven't kept a list of Alabama members like I should but I have some
email messages archived somewhere. I can think of at least two
others, one up by Lake Guntersville (sp?) and another down in
Greenville. I think there are a couple of others also, but they may
have dropped of the list.

I'm a Bama native who started roasting while living in Cahaba Heights does
that count? My mom roasts with a fresh roast in Columbiana and my father
in law also uses a Fresh Roast in Marion. My sister doesn't know it yet but
she will soon be getting a fresh roast to fill her Pelham neighborhood with
the aroma of fresh coffee.
I worked for channel 6 (before Fox) and then a couple of radio stations in
Birmingham that were close by and would stop by O'Henry's daily. Until I
started roasting all of all my coffee was from O'Henry's. I believe Randy
told me that his roasting facility is on Oxmoor Road. I not sure but I
believe he has a Deidrich and when Dr. Bright started the business he had
the roaster in the window of the shop there at 'the curve".
