Topic: a mostly lurker lurks again, Poppery I, Bugisu, filter for C-30 (57 lines)
1) From: John R. Ross
Hi all:
I had some trouble with my email and just let it go so for over a month I
was off this list. It was so long I forgot about it...actually I was
"roasted out"
My family all got the bright idea to give their friends my coffee as gifts
and I roasted more than 45 pounds of coffee in a HWG and 5 poppers. I had 2
extension cords (10 ga).out to my porch each plugged into different circuits
and in this very wet December I had an assembly line system making noise and
pumping the neighborhood full of aromas. The chaff was everywhere. floating
in the air, carpeting all horixontal sufaces and laying a wet scum all round
my patio.
I roasted 10 pounds of Kona almost that much Panama and 5 lbs of Old Brown
Java another 4 pounds of Uganda Bugisu and 5 pounds of Sulawesi
Too much like work, and the best way to ruin a good hobby is to be on a
deadline with daily schedules and UPS shipping dates.
But then I scored a Poppery I! brand new still in its box just this past
Thurseday--$5 before my senior discount.
This thing is downright heavy and built like a tank Seems to be slower to
first crack than the HWG or any other but then quickly (and inexorably)
takes it quicker to second and beyond, which it seems to my tast, makes for
better coffee. And I do 4 ounces instead of 3 or 3.2 ounces and suspect I
could do more in that the beans are still very mobile. and it is quiet
especially compared to the HWG.
Now I use my HWG for my city roast -- Ethiopian, Central American and the
Poppery for my Indonesians, Bugisu, and Indian Kappi robusta (these the dark
smoky backbone of my espresso blends).
Anyway good to be reading about coffee roasting again even if it seems a bit
more sparce than it was in the Fall.
A question: does anyone remember which of the French press filters Tom sells
work on a Sunbeam C-30, my wife says she can detect a tast from the bit of
muslin I have been using as a filter (yeh, I bleach it regularly and with
oxyclean and I keep it wet in the fridge) I do not taste it. She prefers the
Chemex's clean flavor anyway, I like the siphon if I get rid of the flavor
she detects I will maybe get my preference.
I will order from Thom the Bugisu when he gets it in and I will order a lot
of it and other things too when he gets it in stock -- I miss it so --I long
for it so --I pine for it.
Hint hint
John
