Topic: ordered my first Technivorm (4 msgs / 117 lines)
1) From: Stephen Carey
Well, I had to find a good excuse to get the Technivorm Moccamaster
with the Thermal Carafe. I could just buy it, but I like reasons to
buy something when I just want it to see why something is supposed to
be so different. I have a solid drip brewer. It is super clean,
hits the temperature every time (that I check it), has a water filter
in it (and I use filtered water to begin with), and a Swiss Gold
filter in the basket. It doesn't burn the coffee, though I pull the
coffee off and put it in a thermal carafe right away.
On this latest visit to our home in Costa Rica I noticed that our
drip coffee brewer leaked water when it was being poured and coffee
when it was complete and being poured. Also, it does not hit the
temperature. A HA!! (Is that two words or one) I had found my reason
to get my Technivorm. I am sending my current coffee maker down with
friends who are using the house for a few weeks. This will happen
well after (I hope) the Technivorm comes in. I also am using the
excuse of it being my one year roasting anniversary and the fact that
I have a big birthday coming up on September 11.
I don't really know if this will make my roasts taste any better, but
I have read a lot about it and it won't hurt. Plus, the basket hold
button is a great idea. I have read all of what SMs has written
about it and about even carrying the inventory they do. For, it is
true, they are about coffee roasting from their coffee beans. But,
they want us all to succeed, so they carry the ancillary equipment,
some of which is tough to find, some fairly easy, so we can work on
getting the best equipment for us. And they leave what that
equipment is up to us, whether it be a DB/HG or Behmor or whatever
kind of grinder we want. However, in each category they seem to
carry the best of that inventory. Thank you for this.
Once I make my first pot in the machine, from a roast I have made
many times so I can compare, I will drop a note as to my
experience. In all honesty, I do expect some difference, kind of
like a bit of extra light in a room, or the way someone's personality
will light up a room. I believe that the coffee will be a bit more
alive coming out of a brew of this machine. We will see. No matter,
I love how my mind works to get me what I want. And, I put it on a
card that has to be paid off every month, so I didn't go into debt,
which has been the one thing about this hobby which I like. There is
no need to spend a ton of money. And I have yet to go into debt with
this hobby, I save up.
We start out with all of the work Tom and team has done, then we
learn to do our best using whichever method floats our boat and we
are set. Adding the toys will make a difference, but it won't make
me like roasting anymore - the roasting is joy in and of itself.
Thank you,
Stephen

I am guessing that your coffee won't taste significantly different. The
main issue for bad drip coffee preparation is low temps, and your earlier
brewer seems to have accomplished that. The only other issue is drip time,
which the Holy SCAA has determined to be 4 minutes, but I don't know any
brewer that doesn't accomplish close enough to this.
The good thing about the TV is its simplicity, its placement of some
thoughtful features, and quality of components-- quality at least in the
parts that matter most. The basket, water reservoir and adjacent components
are hard plastic, which I wish were otherwise, but I haven't had any
problems with them over the 18 months I've owned one.
I write this as I enjoy a morning blend of Brazilian yellow bourbon and
monsooned Malabar. Not bad. But then I say that about almost any greens
from SMs that I roast myself.
