The time factor is a poor excuse for not using a French Press. If you
have a pot that heats water quickly, you'll probably get your coffee
quicker than using a drip machine (unless it's a Bunn that brews too
quickly for thorough extraction). Clean-up is just as fast, if not
faster since there aren't that many parts. I suppose most people don't
thoroughly clean their drip pots every time, but I sure do!
The real excuse here is that it's "not what he's used to" and he doesn't
feel any need to change. Some people are satisfied with the way they
currently do everything and see no reason to experiment and try
something new. The only way to sway them is with the "WOW! factor" which
only works on a small number of people. Others just don't care that much
about the flavor and think we're all wasting our time. Oh well.

I just bought my dad a french press and sent him some
great coffee but he swears by drip and says the FP is great for a "special
day" like Sunday when he has more time.

Sheila,
That sure has been my experience. It's rare to find someone who cares
about good-tasting coffee. My brother-in-law is one who does, and
happily helps grind etc for moka pot coffee, while my brother is happy
he is staying in a local motel because they have free coffee in the
lobby and he doesn't have to come out here and wait while I grind home
roast and make a single cup in my moka pot. To each his own, of
course, but I've learned to certainly not expect that a given person
will be interested in good coffee, and to recognize it as a rare event
when someone is interested.
