Topic: Can a Gene Cafe make good espresso? (45 lines)
1) From: K W Matley
Some of you might remember my Gene Cafe fiasco, when I left it plugged
in on the patio overnight and it rained. Fried something. After
consulting with the list, and with Tim at Fresh Beans, I ordered a
replacement heater for it, but alas that didn't help. I then boxed it
up and sent it to Tim. He replaced several things, but never got it to
work, so--and this is the great thing about Tim and the Gene Cafe--he
sent me a nearly new replacement! He told me he thought it had been
used twice before he sent it to me.
During the time I was without the Gene Cafe, I returned to HG/DB
roasting, and found that I was enjoying roasting and the resulting
coffee much more than I had in the two years that I used the Gene.
Seems I like having my hands as well as my nose in the roast as it's
progressing. Because my wrists don't like the constant stirring
anymore, I got a bread machine, and ditto. I've now pimped out the
bread machine with a thermocouple and I'm really having fun.
I've become really interested in espresso lately. Haven't had any that
I've liked in a commercial establishment, but some on the list tell me
that they only learned to like espresso once they started pulling their
own shots. I was cruising the local thrift shops over the weekend, and
though I didn't find an espresso machine, it was bread machine bonanza!
I picked up one of the machines I found, brand new and $6, and realized
driving home that I seem to be settling into HG/BM roasting for the
long term.
So back to the Gene Cafe. I have a nearly new Gene Cafe (with a two
year old drum and chaff collector) that I don't use. I'd like to try my
hand at espresso but don't have a machine. Maybe someone on the list
has an entry-level espresso machine they're not using, and is thinking
about trying a Gene Cafe.
If anyone is interested in a trade, we can come to an agreement on
whether to trade straight across, or if one of us will make up the
difference in value between the two machines. Mail me off list if you
are interested.
