Topic: OT - Hospital Grade Electrical Outlet (was Behmor (7 msgs / 113 lines)
1) From: John Grubbs
Ira,
Let me preface this by saying I'm no expert on hospital wiring, so take this
with a grain of salt: Hospital grade outlets are mostly about safety and
reliability. There's nothing inherent in the outlet that would ensure a good
voltage level. The voltage level and its constancy (is that a word?) at any
outlet are affected more by the "strength" of the electrical system feeding
it - including the utility distribution system, the transformer, service
wires, and the building's internal wiring. Voltage is also influenced by
other loads served from the same electrical system.

The orange outlets are isolated ground. Good for noise immunity and
safety, but not voltage.
A nice ferroresonant voltage stabilizer would work, but one which can
support a coffee roaster would be nice 'n heavy.

A multi tap CVT would be just what the doctor ordered. You could mount
it at the power panel and stabilize one circuit with it.

In a ferroresonant transformer the drop in input voltage will create a
corresponding increase in current.
This can result in a runaway condition fairly quickly.

But because of the safety concerns the contacts are stronger and make
much better contact. There are also heavy duty non hospital grade
ones, basically the same ones that aren't orange. The ones in this
hose might have cost $0.50 if we're lucky and that one I use for the
Behmor is getting loose. Voltage drops ever time there is resistance
and each bit of resistance you can reguce helps.

The orange ones are the new industrial standard also. A trip to the big
box store will locate a 20 amp duplex receptacle. The cheap ones are
all 15 amp.
