Topic: Need help on Krups moka carafe (4 msgs / 94 lines)
1) From: Larry Matthews
Coffee lovers,
After almost a year off the email list, I quickly joined again this
weekend when I unfortunately broke my carafe for my Krups Moka brewer. It is
amazing because I had handled it with "kid gloves" for the last month
because I guess I had a pre-monition that I was going to break it. I use it
twice a day and have had it for almost two years. Since I always transfer
the finished coffee to a Rotpunkt 260 vacuum jug which keeps the coffee at
transfer temp for over 4 hours, the coffee never stayed in the Krups carafe
more than 3-5 minutes once the process was complete.
I have looked a replacement for the carafe but they all come with the
filter basket and the stainless basket top. The lowest replacement price I
have seen is $44.95. This is expensive just to replace a carafe.
If someone who uses a Moka would measure the size for me I might find a
replacement carafe that will accommodate the coffee basket and work with the
Moka. Based upon my calculations, it looks like the height needs to be 4.5"
and the diameter is 4". If someone could please verify these dimensions for
me I would be most grateful. Since the Moka depends on an accurate carafe to
insure the steam/liquid transfer, the measurements need to be almost
perfect. If there are other options, please also reply. I have always been
impressed with the improvisions that many on the list develop. I would also
accept any offers from someone who has a Moka machine that they didn't use
any longer and they were willing to part company with it.

2) From: Eddie Dove
Coffee Lover,
The KMB carafe is: 4 3/4" wide X 5 3/8" tall
Note: The width above was measured from the outside of the glass on
one side to outside of the glass on the other side. The glass itself
is about 1/16" thick.

The issue is not just the size of the carafe, but also the way the
handle/lid work together. Are you thinking that you can fit the old
handle on the new carafe? If so, you might have to find a carafe that
has the "channel" about one inch up the side into which the metal band
that stabilizes the handle fits. The band is 5/8 of an inch wide.
My carafe measures 4.75 inches in diameter and is 5.5 inches tall. FWIW,
I bit the bullet and purchased the whole carafe/top so I would have a
backup.

I see that others have answered your measurement request.
HOWEVER - if you find a $uitable replacement for a lower price, you
are REQUIRED to let us all know!
My carafe has the same dimensions as Vicki and Eddie stated - probably
the same dimensions as the other TWO KMB carafes that I had
previously.
