Topic: Uganda thoughts (3 msgs / 73 lines)
1) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
Uganda has been very frustrating. There just doesn't seem to be
anyone who really understands the "quality message". I'll be frank,
in retrospect all the Ugandas we have had that have been good were
just a matter of luck. They happened to be fairly well processed,
happened to ship out without transport damage etc. But that luck
usually doesn't last. Everything I have cupped in the last 2-3
seasons has been dreck. To make real quality improvements you really
can not swoop in, find a good coop of farmers, offer good prices,
then airlift the coffee out or something. It takes so much education,
improvements in processing, storage, sorting ... and then there's all
the people that handle the coffee and get it exported. You have to
find a real maverick who actually understands coffee quality, and can
prevent lots from being ruined. There was a huge disappointment last
season in Malawi - found a guy who talked the talk, found buyers,
found good cultivars, and in the end he was really blowing smoke and
the coffee he wanted to ship was a million miles from the samples we
had cupped. Burundi is very promising this year. We might have
something good going there. Uganda, nothing. There are multinationals
there who are interested in quantity, and the status quo, and nothing
yet to be very hopeful about. Sorry to be so negative, but that's the
situation. :-(

Tom,
Thanks for the information! What a sad commentary, when we see the quality
going up in so many places. In my opinion a good Bugisu is the best coffee
in the world for every day consumption. With all of your awesome offerings,
I must admit that I don't miss it as much as I like to complain that it
isn't available. By the way, those 4 star Columbians you brought in were
simply stunning! Sipping a little cold Columbian right now and it is good
that way too.

This is why Sweet Maria's is The Only Place To Buy Greens!
To think some poor, misguided soul thought for a nanosecond of buying from
another supplier; and submitted the thought to the list.
