Topic: Saturday Morning cup and the AlfiBodEx coffee maker (4 msgs / 88 lines)
1) From: Kris Bhatti
I'm taking a road trip to Monterey and San Francisco next week with my mom and of course I'm already planning which coffee supplies to bring along. My favorite drip coffee makers right now are Chemex and porcelain Melitta filter cone. I'm not taking the Chemex on the road, but would kind of like to make more than just a cup at a time. I had this inspiration last night and tried it out this morning with great success! I have an Alfi thermal carafe that I got in Denmark a few years ago. I also have the glass filter cone of a Bodum Bistro brewer - it was free on the Sweet Maria's sale page a few months ago. I set the filter cone on top of the carafe, but it wasn't a good fit. I discovered that the rubber sleeve would slide off the bottom of the filter cone, so I turned it around the other way and now it rests nicely on top of the carafe. Since I plan to hold the coffee in the carafe for some hours, I thought I might prefer a paper filter over the
gold filter it came with, so I stuck a Chemex filter in and proceeded with my usual Chemex method. I've got an electric kettle that holds just the right amount of water, so it doesn't matter that I can't see the level inside the pot as I'm pouring. This beans I used were Rwanda Gkongoro Nyarusiza that I roasted in the SCTO yesterday - fantastic! http://picasaweb.google.com/krisbhatti/AlfiBodEx/photo#s5227414239382910050Kris

Kris,
We do love our coffee, don't we. Great idea, hope you have lots of
success. More, I hope your time with your mom is precious and very special.
Traveling mercies,
Stephen

Hi Kris,
Thanks for sharing the pictures!
I HAD a spherical thermos like that...
It rolled off the seat onto the passenger side floor while driving...
smashed all up inside ....
but did not leak :)
It did ruin some very good Harrar though
:(
Please be careful...

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the warning! I don't know if I could handle losing another precious piece of coffee equipment - I broke the top part of my Hario vacuum brewer a few months ago and I'm still sad about that. I managed to keep the thermos in one piece on my 5 day bike trip back when I bought it, so I would hate to lose it to a roll off the car seat. You know what I was more likely to break though? The filter cone! For some reason, I thought it was Lexan plastic. Then I looked up the model on the SM site to see what the name was and realized it was glass. I had not been all that careful with it, so it's kind of surprising that I didn't break it already.
