Topic: Fancy coffee (10 msgs / 253 lines)
1) From: John Despres
Here's what happened to me this afternoon. My wife and I headed to Ann
Arbor to see a play in which an old friend was performing. We got there
early to usher, and after getting our instruction, we had half an hour
to kill so we took a walk down Main Street.
I was dead exhausted after a two hour drive and a very difficult week at
work, so when I saw a coffee shop, I made a beeline for it while Lea
dropped in to another shop.
It looked like a pretty typical shop. I was alone at the counter so I
told the young girl on the other side I was rather choosy about my
espresso and did she feel up to the challenge; she replied yes.
"I'd like a ristretto, then" I said.
"I'm sorry, we don't do those kind of fancy drinks" was her response.
I'm not kidding.
I explained a ristretto to her and she took her best shot at it. While
it wasn't terrible, I indicated it was fairly good. Over-roasted (burnt)
beans, but not bitter. Weird. I then started discussing 'spro with her
and she allowed she hates the stuff. She invited me behind the counter
to show her what I meant. Since there was only about 3 minutes for me to
play, I gave her an "assignment" (the professor in me is always
surfacing). Using the four buttons with graphics of coffee cups on them,
I gave her five different shots to try. Since she didn't like espresso,
I told her to simply taste each shot and sink the rest. As I rushed out
to get to the theatre, I told her I'd be back after the show to see what
she thought of them.
Two hours later I returned, keeping my word. She hated them all, but
swore she certainly tried every one. I sighed. A moment later her work
partner came up and I started chatting with her. I told them both I
roast my own coffee and girl number two exclaimed "I want to do that,
but I have to save my money first" I asked how much she'd have to save
and she said about two grand.
I proceeded to set this misguided child straight.
"No, no, no! You know what a heat gun is?"
"Yes"
"You know where to get a large stainless steel dog dish?"
"Yes"
"Get one of each and go to sweetmarias.com, order some beans and get
roasting."
I wrote it all down for her and bid them good-bye.
I also got a second shot on the house. It was the same as the first, but
much more fun the second time.
This is fun.

Awesome story!!! I get the blessing of being able to do this kind of regularly, except roles are kind of switched in that I'm on the barista side, and get to have this interaction with customers. Wow... great story. I loved it.

Oh, PS... next time you're in Ann Arbor you should go to Zingerman's. They aren't the greatest and it depends on who is working as to whether it will be horrible or decent or kinda-sorta-actually-good, but it's one of the better stops in Michigan. Over on that side of the state is also the Ugly Mug which is, IMO, the best shop in Michigan (coming from someone who works at a shop in Michigan that isn't the Ugly Mug). UM is in Ypsilanti. They roast in shop and pull shots on a Synesso. Great stuff and fun people.
Ok... that is all. Thanks again for the inspirational story!

Let me know the name of the shop, since I occasionally play in Ann
Arbor!

I checked out you web site. How long have you been creating mobiles? I think
I've seen your work years ago at the Midland art show.

I'm going to take a guess and say he wound up at Espresso Royale, since
that's about the only coffee place left in A2 that isn't a *$. (Well,
that and Angelo's, but that's further down by UMMC, and it's diner
coffee at best - I've had better from the Java Coast stand at University
Hospital, which caters strictly to the post-call crowd.)
Zing's has recently started making a lot of noise about their locally
roasted coffee, and it's not bad, but dear God is it overpriced.
($25/lb for Daterra Sweet Yellow - ?!?) Their sandwiches and baked
goods are well worth the trip, though. Just don't make the mistake of
trying to get in on a football Saturday...

Hi, Randy.
I've been building mobiles about 7 years now. I think you saw another
sculptor in Midland. I don't do shows and fairs as the mobiles are too
big to travel and one mobile could fill up a tent. I more typically do
indoor installation exhibits. But I do have several on public display
about town here in Grand Rapids.
Thanks for checking out my site!

The ones that I saw were large, but certainly not THAT large. This was about
30 years ago too. Your picture looks much younger than that.
