Topic: The Grinder Puzzle (5 msgs / 116 lines)
1) From: Les
I talked to two technical departments today at two highly respected repair
shops, and the Major has been pronounced dead! Some parts will be salvaged
and used or sold, but I had to go through the agony and puzzlement of
picking a new grinder. I also need to say upfront, I am so thankful for an
understanding wife! I did a search on Ebay, but no luck on getting a cheap
Major. I then dreamed about a Mazzer Robur or Kony, but they were out of my
price limit. I even looked at a Ditting. I kept thinking about the Macap
Conical that I was able to play with for 2 weeks and the head to head
competition with the Mazzer Major. I really wanted a Conical. Then having
some more discussion with my wife, she really wanted something that would go
in the kitchen rather than me having to always step out into the shop to do
the grinding. I then mulled over the thought of getting a Mazzer Mini or a
Rancilio Rocky. I really couldn't go there. Not that they are bad, but I
am spoiled!
I then began looking at the Compak K-10. It is a nice 68mm burr conical
that would squeeze into the kitchen, but too spendy again. I almost
ordered a Compak K-3 (not a conical) with 58mm burrs for a bit over $400.00
with shipping, but just couldn't see myself without a conical or nice big
burrs. So, after all this debate, I ordered a Cimbali Max Hybrid Espresso
Grinder. So I am looking forward to having a nice size grinder (same size
as the Cimbali Jr.) with combination Conical and flat burrs measuring a nice
64mm. So the agony is over. Since I am one who really does believe the
Grinder is the most important tool for excellent coffee, I just had to get
something that wouldn't disappoint me every time I ground a shot or coffee
for a pot. I am hoping this grinder will meet or exceed my expectations.
Does anyone on the list have a Cimbali Max Hybrid? Thoughts? Impressions?

I don't have experience with the Max Hybrid, but have seen lots of posts on
other forums about it. What I've seen has been positive; so, perhaps you can
guinea pig for us?
cheers,
Scott

Les,
Looks like a good choice. But, I hope I don't have to replace my
Major any time soon.

Les,
Ditto condolences and congratulations on the Max Hybrid decision. Also have
no experience with the Max but have read many favorable reviews. It's high
on my possible home use upgrade list. (If I ever have any money again that's
not sucked into mcKona Koffee:-)
The good thing about your Major mishap at least you only paid ~$35 for it
not $995 new!!!

Les,
I believe fellow list member Derek Bradford purchased a Cimbali Max
Hybrid. I have been very interested in that grinder and look forward
to your comments on the grinder.
