1) I've never used the 1/4 pound setting, I've used the 1/2 pound
setting once or twice first time using it, and exclusively use the 1#
setting to roast 1# of coffee, I've never had a problem getting to
desired roast levels, never maxed out the time. The only thing I've had
go wrong is when a bean doesn't hit first crack, then its hard to gage
where the roast level is at. I've over roasted a time or two because of
that and ended up with Vienna beans. And I use the default setting for
the clean cycle, per instructions, which I believe is 1/2# setting.
2) I need the smoke suppression. I have to open a window and use a fan
to blow out what does come out so my wife won't complain about the
smell. Without the smoke suppression, it would be a lot worse. It's one
of the reasons I bought it. And, so far I'm happy with the level of
control the settings provide. I've not had need to do a lot of fancy
tweaking from the standard settings.
New? One thing not mentioned is more lighting that would more adequately
fill the chamber. The light seems weak and it is too hard to see the
bean color adequately. I suppose a temp. gauge in addition to time (I
wouldn't want to give up the time) would be handy to help get an idea
where the roast is at, but I fear it would only give us air temp in the
chamber which will fluctuate with the elements going on and off, rather
than telling us bean temperature or an estimate thereof. But if there
was a way, it would be handy to know that.
One mod if there is consideration of changing things, is the user
interface could be improved some. One, have the P1, P2, P3, P4 & P5
automatically start at the default times when pushed rather than having
to push the A, B, C, D--, or D++. Just have the time adjustment buttons.
Switch the + & - around so that the + is on the right side which is more
intuitive, then move that control under the P buttons so there is a
natural flow (Pick a weight, profile, then adjust time as needed from
profile default). That would give more room too to add that temp display
window. :)
And, I sort of like the count down time. I would rather know how much
time is left than how much has passed. Plus, if you forget what time it
will automatically shut off, going up will be harder to watch for that.
So if going up is added, I would hope the option to have it count down
would be preserved.
