I would want the temperature readings to note how long it takes to reach
a certain temperature and at what temperature beans reach first and
second crack. It would be an early warning system. Also you can control
the temperature-you can open the door and bring the temperature down!
Getting more light would be nice, but it is not really that important to
me. Truly, I really have done a lot of roasting in the dark!
As for my Behmor running cold, I did get one in the first month it was
out there. I have always blamed the electrical set-up in my house, which
is why I never thought it was worth calling Joe Behm about it. I am one
of the few people I have heard of who had a I-Roast that ran cold, so
when the Behmor did the same, I immediately blamed my voltage-which I
have never checked, I confess. For what it is worth, lightbulbs burn out
faster in my house than in my neighbour's houses as well, and we have
had other bizarre small electrical problems as well. I know nothing
about electricity, but we have talked for years about getting a forensic
electrician to take a look at our wiring. It is a new (2001) house, so
it is not one of those retrofit problems, but I suspect that the work
was done poorly to begin with.
But I am intrigued that some people have had second Behmors that ran
hotter on the same voltage, so I might give Joe a call.
And on the other point-my smoke suppression, after an average of 4-5
roasts a week since October works like a charm-as well now as the day I
got it.
If you watch your roast closely, there is no need to worry about doing
1/2 lb on the 1 lb setting...but then again, with my roaster, I could
not burn the beans if I wanted to!

You can have a meaningful temperature reading by buying a digital
thermocouple device (Sweet Maria's has 'em, Home Despot has 'em. I bought
one at HD for less than 30 bucks) and threading the TC carefully thru the
door seal next to the chaff collector. Just make sure it won't get tangled
in anything moving! BUT - Since you can't control the temp, what good does
it do to read it?
