The 3.5 cup may be a little small unless you are just making rice for one
person. I find that the 5.5 cup model works very well for 1-4 people. I
bought the 5.5 cup induction model for just over $200 earlier this year from
a dealer on ebay who has both the 3.5 and 5.5 induction models available now
for $203 and $208. http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/dhyansmit_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZHomeroast mailing list

Zara,
Your comments answer a question for me. I noticed in the Zojirushi
page materials that the Induction 3.5 "cup" model can cook as little
as .5 "cup" of rice. I do live alone and small batches are attractive,
but if your 5 "cup" induction model can effectively cook 1 cup at a
time, that is sufficient for me.
The price of the eBay dealer, $228 with shipping, is attractive. (I
noticed that the 3.5 fuzzy model price has increased from $122 to $134
today.) Zara, I'm wondering about warranty. I didn't see anything on
the eBay page about warranty. Was this a concern to you when you
decided to buy from the eBay dealer? About a year ago I had a $35 hand
mixer break the first time I used it, and Amazon immediately sent me a
new one, and sent a postage-paid shipping label to return the old one.
I'd hate to have a $230 appliance go belly up on the first usage and
not have a warranty.
Thanks for your comments.

I think the least I have ever cooked at once is 2 of their little cups
because I usually want at least some leftover for other recipes such as
Japanese rice balls (onigiri). If they say it will work with 1 cup, I'm
sure it will.
The seller I bought from sent a brand new factory sealed box with all the
standard warranty materials. I figured I would use ebay's buyer protection
if the seller was a cheat and Zojirushi's customer service for any warranty
issues.
I have never had a problem with the rice cooker and love it. I only wish I
had bought a Zojirushi years ago instead of using the cheap one I used to
have. I use it for a wide variety of grains, not just rice, and it does a
perfect job every time. My only complaint is that it is slow, so I have to
plan ahead a little.

Hi Zara,
In the rice cooker reviews I have seen, the main complaint regarding
Zojirushi is that they are slow. But as I intend to use the clock
function nearly every time I use it, slow is no problem for me.
You mention using the Zojirushi for other grains. Actually, my primary
use will probably be for the wonderful grits that Adluh sells here in
Columbia. But who knows, I may get into rice more, which also is
produced here in SC, though I haven't run into local rice yet. I used
to eat plain white rice a lot, reheated in a frying pan with eggs,
broccoli, etc., spiced with herbs and jalapeno dust from Penzey's.
Thanks again for your insights, Zara.

My fuzzy logic 3-cup cooker (not induction) has lasted me two years so far,
and another friend has had hers for 2 years and uses it much more often than
I use mine. She cooks for 2, I cook for 1. It cooks rice and steel-cut
oatmeal very well. Wheat berries are good too.
I cooked coarse hominy in mine on the rice setting, and it was tasty,
although I've never cooked coarse hominy before, only grits on the stove.
I like cooking short-grain haiga rice, which is sort of between white and
brown - the stickiness of white rice, but some of the extra nutrition of
brown rice.
I have this cooker, got it during one of Amazon's buy $125, get $25 off
sales:http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-KCC05-Programmable-Cooker-Warmer/dp/B00004S57C/ref=sr_1_5?ieF8&s=home-garden&qid17790972&sr=8-5The cooker is a little slow because it includes a soaking period. You can
speed things up using the "quick cook" option (at least on mine.) However,
I rarely worry about that, because the timer really simplifies things. If
you have it set to be ready for 6 pm, and you don't get home until 7pm, the
rice is still great. Many times, I just leave extra rice in the cooker
overnight on the "warm" function, then pack it in a (hot) insulated
container to eat warm at work the next day. Or I'll have steel-cut oats one
morning, and eat the leftovers the next morning (that have been sitting
"warm" in the cooker). Of course, if milk or butter was involved, I
wouldn't do all of that.
The only time I wished I had a bigger cooker was when some friends were
having a sushi-making party with 8 people. For day-to-day, the small cooker
is perfect. You want something that can sit out on your counter like a
toaster.

There are a couple of really superb cook books that are targeted towards
these units that might make you rethink your choice of sizes. Many people
use them to prepare whole meals in them, layering vegetables and fish on top
of the rice and then cooking them as one to get a ready serve meal from them
as needed.
They will hold rice in near perfect condition for up to 48 hours if needed,
though I would not want to do so if htere was anything added to the rice.
We use ours constantly, and it pretty much only gets turned off when we are
preparing a fresh batch of rice. Household of 4, and a y year old that
could probably live on just rice if we gave her a chance. We roll it in Sea
Weed for a delicious quick snack for the girls.
You won't go wrong no matter which one you choose. But I would expect it to
last alot longer than some have inferred. They have a good deal of
electronics, but they are well built.
