I think those bags are slightly permeable to let the ethylene from
ripening fruit escape. The presence of ethylene can cause further
ripening. Won't mean much for coffee beans, and the bags are probably
more oxygen permeable (in the wrong direction) than normal ones.
As far as Consumer Reports goes, I have rather little faith in
anything they do that borders on science or technology (and they have
a bizzarre fetish for preferring dull cars). As far as I know berries
and basil do not produce ethylene (they don't ripen after they are
picked), and therefore are useless as test articles.

Those bags are not worth the time to get them. My wife and I tried them out
with bananas, cut salad mix, and different fruit and they all spoiled within
a day or two. All food that me put in them were bought either that day or
the day before. The bananas in particular were still half green when we put
them in and in a day they looked good on the outside but were mushy on the
inside. Definitely not worth the time or money to get the. luckily the
store we got them at refunded our money the next day.
