Topic: Behmor v. GeneCafe re smoke (5 msgs / 92 lines)
1) From: John Crippen
Fellow Roasters,
All other things being equal (as they are certainly not), which roaster
emits less smoke, the Behmor or the GeneCafe? I am a happy HG/DB roaster in
a temperate climate, but one of my HG/DB roaster friends just moved to
Bulgaria and won't be able to roast outdoors all winter. Price, roast size,
roast control, roast range and ease-of-use aside, which one is better for
inside roasting?
Thanks in advance for your opinions,
Crippen

I can't speak for the GeneCafe, but the behmor smoke suppressor does a great
job. My wife has asthma and the smoke from my IR2, even with the vent hose
going outside, would set her off. With the Behmor, no problems.

The Gene Cafe produces more smoke; it has no smoke abatement
technology. I believe it now ships with a chaff collector / exhaust
vent that can be attached to an aluminum dryer vent hose and vented
outside, but this will, to some extent, adversely affect one's ability
to hear 1st and 2nd crack. i used to use mine under the range hood
that was vented to the outside. The Behmor does have smoke abatement
technology. Both, will emit roasting aromas.
With the Gene Cafe, one has complete control over time and temperature
throughout the entire roast. The Behmor provides for some automation
with pre-configured selections that can be modified to some extent.
The Gene Cafe can roast up to 10 oz. and the Behmor can roast up to a
pound.
Respectfully,
Eddie

And I can speak for the Gene Cafe - it produces significant amounts
of smoke - I roast in our smallish sun room. If I don't open it up
it'll haze the whole place pretty well.

I use the Gene Cafe with the dryer-hose exhaust directed outside, and it
works great. With practice, there is no issue hearing the cracks, though
they can be more muffled than other roasters.
