Topic: John Brown? (11 msgs / 466 lines)
1) From: Lynne
I've already asked some of my homeroast friends on Facebook, but with the
sad news of Ron Kyle's passing, I thought I'd post this here.
I've been wondering if anyone has heard anything at all about our John
Brown. In his last posting to the group he said that his cancer was
terminal and that he felt that he wouldn't be here much longer - I emailed
him a short time ago, but never heard back from him, and, of course, I
feared the inevitable.
Then I did a search on google, and, sad to say, I came up with this obit at
tucson.com (the link doesn't work, so I copied & pasted below):
John Bartlett Brown died Thursday, July 17, 2008 after a courageous battle

I was hoping that this wasn't our John Brown (who lived in Tucson and
suffered from cancer), but it really seems that our homeroast family has
sent two dear members over with the angels. Sad for us, but oh, yes - heaven
is a better place now.
I raise my cup to both Ron & John, and salute their great (yes,
caffeinated!) spirits.

May John & Ron be roasting, brewing, and toasting each other in heaven.

This is a sad day. I too raise my morning cup to them both.

I have been off list and really swamped but tonight I was trying to
catch up when
Lynne's post from the 13th caught my eye. I didn't see the obit in
the paper but
John hasn't been answering my e-mails and the other day instead of a
dead
phone I got a "number is not in service." We went over to the house
this past
weekend and there was a big dumpster in the yard. No one was around,
but
obviously the house is being cleaned out. I'm afraid this is our John
Brown.

Joanne, thank you *so* much for going over there. I knew there was someone
on the list who lived in Tucson, but couldn't, for the life of me, remember
who it was.
I realized that the odds were against there being two John Browns in Tucson
- both having had cancer.
The link directly to his obituary didn't work, but if anyone wants to read
it, go tohttp://www.tucsoncitizen.com and then click on obituaries on the
bottom of the page; you can then scroll down and do a search by name.
This is the link to leave a comment in the guestbook:http://www.legacy.com/tucson/GB/GuestbookView.aspx?PersonId3706099He seemed to be a simple man of few words - an a very kind and thoughtful
person.
I can tell everyone now what he did for me - after I mentioned in my posts
that my fibromyalgia was getting the better of me, and stirring the beans as
I roast stove top (my best roasting method) was difficult, he decided to
make something to help me.
This wasn't too long ago, so he was actually in the final stages of the
cancer that finally got him. What he did was buy a hand mixer for me to use!
I was in shock - and actually cried, to think that someone who was so sick
would do that for me!!
What a kind soul - and now, I am certain, he is sharing space with Ron Kyle
in a very caffeinated heaven!
sigh - what a week..

Thanks for the confirmation JoAnne.
Though I've never met any of you, in reading our list everyday (several
times a day) and corresponding, it's like we are a distant family that never
get to see each other. I'm taking the time to say hi to John and Ron as I
enjoy my morning Kenya Kirinyaga roarsted 4 days ago to FC.
Here's to you gentlemen. May you not have suffered or been in too much pain.
:(

Lynne, thanks for again putting out the info on the obit list and
guest book,
I tried to write a note in it, but how do you put into words what
someone
has meant to you and the spot they held in your life. He was a pillar
of
strength to me when I had my hip replaced and we had plans to meet one
more time in his kitchen to roast, drink, and talk coffee. I just
didn't recover
quickly enough and then his e-mails quit, the messages on his answering
machine didn't get answered and I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my
stomach that he was in hospice somewhere and I didn't know where.
It is a relief to know he is at peace.

I am sure that John and Ron are having great coffee this morning.

Hopefully the By-line of "Chock full O' Nuts" is wrong or that is what
is being served, It went like this: "Chock full O' Nuts is a Heavenly
coffee, better coffee a millionaire's money can't buy." I guess the
advertising worked, as I can still remember the jingle.

Having a cup of Colombian Huila decaf, mixed with some caffeinated mixed,
left-over beans, Chemex brewed this morning. It's gotten cold now, but
surprisingly, the taste is even deeper, richer...
I raise my cup to toast John and Ron this afternoon.
Listening to Nat King Cole's "At Last"... funny how this played while I was
typing this..
"..and here we are in heaven.."
no rain today (rare this summer), but still feeling a little sad - no,
bittersweet is a better word.
"...I found a dream I could call my own..."
Wow - the lyrics are so appropriate... amazing.
I know both kind souls are in a better place... I know they found their
respective eternal dreams.
...at last.

It got changed in the early 1950s from "better coffee a Rockefeller's
money can't buy" when Nelson Rockefeller entered NYS politics
(eventually, of course, becoming Gov.) and the family threatened to sue.
