Topic: The saddest sound... (4 msgs / 80 lines)

I was roasting Guatemala Ocana in the Behmor on P2. I was shooting for C+
to FC. I knew I was in trouble when it went into the low power phase and
had not reached 1st. I watched. I waited. I finally heard a
snap...pause...than another...pause. It never seemed to get rolling and it
seemed to stop each time the power cycled down. Then there was a long quiet
period and I figured first was over. I was roasting 1/2 lb of beans on the
1 lb setting, and it had been going for over 17 minutes, so I hit cool.
Just as I did, I heard it. 2nd crack. It was agonizing, waiting for the
burst of cool air to start cooling things down while I heard 2nd crack
continue. I roast indoors and my wife hates the smoke, so opening the door
to speed things up was not an option. Finally, after about 80 seconds of
the cooldown phase it finally stopped roasting.
The result is not bad, but it is clearly FC+ and I taste the roast more than
the origin. P2, you've beaten me again! But on a serious note, when I use
P2, and the temp drop happens before 1st starts, I often find I don't hear
much of 1st crack at all. Maybe a dozen snaps, but that's it. Anyone else
having this issue?

Yup mine behaves the same way.
P2 is a toughie. I have had a few good ones but I have to overshoot where I
think 1st snap should really be rolling strong by at least 20 seconds.
I'm still considering calling Joe and getting the physical modification to
make it run a little warmer.

Seth,
That's been my experience as well. If I get the power drop before I
hear any 1st crack, it's usually muted, and will roll into 2nd with nary
a sound.
For a half-pound, I usually started with P2 "B" for a twenty minute
start time. For almost all beans, with a load between 220-250g, first
would stop before the power drop at 12:00.

I don't use P2 any more and that's partly the reason--although I've
never had roasting continue longer than 10 seconds after the cool
cycle begins.
