Topic: coffee roaster longevity (3 msgs / 70 lines)
1) From: Steve Bien
Having my Fresh Roast only last a year or two won't be a biggy but stepping
up the next generation will be a substantial investment. What's the word on
the life expectancy on the higher priced roasters like the Gene cafe and
Behmor, among others?

I've had my refurbished Fresh Roast more like Two years, by now. If yours
runs but doesn't heat, you have been victimized by the Thermal Fuse
Conspiracy.
The fix for blown thermal fuses is to bypass them with a re-calibrated F*th*-
18ga copper wire link. The limiting temperature and current will be
different, but there will still be limits, protection still in force.
With the roaster so modified, one should stifle the urge to go do something
else while the roaster is running. Blows my mind that my Celtic Critic can
abandon the embroidery machine while it's sewing out a pattern, but every
stitch and hoop movement is programmed.
Repeat embroidery patterns will be identical; nearly impossible with all the
variables in coffee roasting. I didn't say "impossible-" industrial control
can do a lot. Then we'd all have the Foulgers miKe describes.
Cheers, Mabuhay -RayO, aka Opa!
To the fuse!

I can speak directly to the longevity potential of the HotTops "hammerimg"
two of them very hard for 5 months back when waiting for the USRC 3k to be
built. I mean, way beyond their intended home use often roasting 30 or more
simultaneous batches back to back in marathon sessions, approx' 400LB greens
HT roasted total in that time. While they're no longer needing to be riden
hard both are still working fine. One still with me the other CCR HT moved
on to another SM Lister.
