Listers shouldn't miss the New-York-Times-on-the-
web site Wednesday morning. It offers the big picture on coffee in
America these days.

John,
It didn't jump out at me. Can you be more specific? I can't seem to find the
article.
Thanks John,

The Foxfire "find" function also failed to locate the word "coffee" in the
NYTimes webpage for 3 September. The box turns red and beeps on the first
"f".
But there are interesting articles on chickpeas, flu vaccine for the elderly
and construction site pilferage, while we wait for the political convention
to go away and for the next hurricane.

Not so fast. Mickey-D's didn't start test marketing frozen coffee drinks in
'97 did they?

They probably did. I remember McD's trying, briefly, to get into the
gourmet coffee market way back in '92.
Anyway, this article has a real 1997 "vibe" to it. For example,
consider this line:
"But with prices as high as $5 for a 20-ounce caffeine slushy, the
desire for homemade facsimiles flourishes."
In 2008, there's no way the author would mention $5 coffee drinks
without including a passing reference to "these recessionary times" or
"the uncertain economy".

I ruefully admit to having started this confused string, neglecting to point
out that the article to which I referred was cunningly hidden in the
"Travel" box in the webnet NYT of Sept 3, 2008. That was yesterday, 2008.
My carelessness produced several "I couldn't find it" inquiries, all of them
answered off-list.
I don't know just how the 11-year-old story (indeed, twas 11 years ago),
came up, but I'm glad it did. Eleven years ago I was still a tea freak, not
yet aspiring to become a java-freak, and overlooked the 1997 article's
interesting recipes. Were it not so, there would be no coffee ice-cubes in
my freezer, and I would not be anticipating an improved iced version of
Vietnamese coffee for dessert tonight.
All this is rather confusing for a soon-to-be-nonagenarian, currently in
love via the net with Koratie dry-process, desserts including sweetened
condensed milk, Sandy, Michelle Obama, and Katrina vanden Heuvel. Cheers,
he says, quoting Ray.

Egad- My daughter, Sarah, brought home a bottle of espresso flavored Vodka.
She is also the kid that took me to try some "Premium" McDreck last year.
Why not- it was early enough, and I remember I liked their early AM joe a
decade ago.
Night crew was usually astute and left clean brewing equipment for the day
crew. It sure didn't last into the mid day, nor did it transfer to the P.
McDreck last year. Big misteak, and I truly despise Vodka normally.
A fabulous espresso double shot is what I just brewed and enjoyed. Don't
adulterate great shots in any way- it's the one thing I've learned about the
neat drinks. "Espresso Vodka" is a gimmick I don't need, but it could get *
really* cold when mixed with the ice in a Coffee Slushie.
