Topic: got my new rocky burrs... (31 msgs / 1426 lines)
1) From: Benjamin VerHage
My new burrs and screws arrived today from 1st-line equipment. I was kind o=
f surprised by the shoddy shipping job. The two burrs and all the screws ca=
me in the same small plastic bag with no padding material in the box. T=
his let the burrs and screws not only bounce around inside the box, but sma=
sh into each other the whole trip. Not sure if they are damaged or not, I n=
eed to take them downstairs and look at them under magnification. They may =
be fine, but I expected at least some newspaper in there. Yikes.

Interesting.
I got the same thing from espressoparts.com when I ordered my Mazzer burrs a
few weeks ago. When the box came I tossed it on the table and I heard the
burrs jingle. I thought "that isn't good". They assured me they were
authentic Mazzer burrs just without the Mazzer blister pack and packed in a
standard Glad sandwich bag without any padding to protect themselves from
each other. I didn't care what they said and demanded Mazzer packaged
burrs. I looked at the burrs they sent without magnification and it was
clearly seen that there were little nicks on the sharpened edges. What are
they thinking? Then they told me that was the only way they get them as
bulk items from Mazzer and they will "try" to find some in a blister pack
for me. While they were trying I ordered Mazzer burrs from 1st Line and
received, as I was assured, Mazzer packaged burrs.

Yeah, these weren't packaged stating the brand or any information at all. J=
ust a couple burrs in a clear ziplock bag. They are also very dull and ro=
ugh, not nice and shiny like you'd expect newly machined burrs to look. T=
o me it looks like they heat treated the parts post-machining...not good.=
Heat treating will distort the parts, which will lead to crappy tolerancin=
g, which will in turn lead to less than perfect grinding. The correct way=
would be to harden, and then machine. That would be more costly due to mac=
hining harder steel, but the product would be much better. This leads me to=
believe these are some kind of generic parts. I guess I'll check them unde=
r the microscope and then proceed from there.

So I just looked at the burrs under a microscope and there are definitely a=
lot of dings on the edges, as well as dings and scratches all over the par=
ts. I also noticed small rust spots on the surfaces as well which is not ac=
ceptable. I will email them back and see what they are willing to do.
(Too bad sweet maria's doesn't sell these I've been spoiled by their pr=

I just installed new burrs in my Rocky that have been on my counter for
several weeks. Sorry, but I don't remember where I ordered them from, might
have been WLL. The arrived here in a small ziplock bag with a piece of
cardboard between them to protect them from each other. I don't think there
was much other packaging in the box, but keeping them from smacking against
each other was all they really needed. They feel noticeably sharper than the
ones I just took out, so they should grind better. Gonna go find out now. I
didn't get new screws. No problem with that as long as you apply sufficient
downforce on the screwdriver.

Just got a voicemail from customer service saying how they were shocked (li=
terally shocked...he said shocked, then surprised, but then finally decid=
ed on shocked) that a customer would take the time to look at parts under=
a microscope. He said all the burrs would have scratches and dings because=
they are shipped in bulk anyway, and that rust is just the nature of the b=
east because it's made out of hardened steel (that's definitely debatable d=
epending on the type of steel and how it's processed). I have a hard time b=
elieving they chuck these things in a big box and send them from Italy, but=
 maybe they do.
So for the most part he sounded disgusted with me and said they have sold o=
ver 300 sets and they never got any complaints until I came along. Apparent=
ly the parts are "unreturnable and unexchangable unless you can see the d=
efect with the naked eye" (funny, I don't remember seeing that on their ter=
ms/conditions).
I mean, he may be correct in what he's saying, but the sound of disgust in =
his voice kind of ticked me off. I design implants/instruments for the =
spine industry so maybe my standards are a bit higher due to the rigors of =
medical device manufacturing. However, food contact items are pretty contro=
lled as well. I have a hart time swallowing the line about rust, especually=
when it comes in to contact with food. I may be incorrect about how sensit=
ive these things need to be, but I don't think so.
I'll take a look at my old burrs that are currently installed and decide wh=
at to do. I'll bet they aren't rusty!

Hrm, that kind of response is a bit shocking in and of itself, given
what's being sold. I've had no dealing with 1st Line, but have
considered them as a vendor for a new espresso machine & grinder. Thanks

As for him saying that he's never heard of customers putting burrs to

grinds through a scanning electron microscope...

Sorry this is a bit long, but it shows something I would have never
guessed about burrs.
I purchased a set of Mazzer Robur Burrs in the Mazzer blister pack
and when I opened and looked at them, the outer burr was nicely
machined but the inner burr had clearly been cut with a roughing
cutter, and just hardened, no finish machining at all and no real
edges to speak of. So I took some nice pictures and set them and a
note to Mazzer asking about the quality. In reply I got 2 messages,
the first profusely apologizing and promising to send me 2
replacement sets to make up for the problem soon followed by a
message asking for the serial number of my grinder. Given that I
don't own a Robur I didn't have one to give him at which time Mazzer
stopped replying to my emails. So my phone service is cheap enough
to Italy and I had the mans name I started calling and spoke to him
twice and he promised to look into something and then eventually just
insisted that that's how the burrs are. Later I spoke to the Mazzer
importer and he said after I'd complained to the seller and the
seller had relayed the message to him that they'd opened a few
packages to check and they were all the same.
From that there are a couple of things to be guessed at.
Making perfect burrs is not that important for the grinding of coffee
Making perfect burrs is to expensive
Mazzer has no customer service
Mazzer has no quality control.
On last thing, In my quest to answer the question I didn't find one
person besides me who had ever looked closely at a set of burrs. I
even called the importer of the Duranium burrs and asked if their
burrs were sharp and they didn't have a clue.
I still have no idea if this set of Robur burrs is defective.

Definitely my experience from 1st line.
Here is the follow up email for those interested. It still makes me laugh h=
ow disgusted he is about the whole thing. Just a different world than the o=
ne I'm used to dealing with I guess. What really makes me laugh is picturin=
g myself telling a surgeon or sales rep or hospital that "the rust on my in=
strument will come right off after a couple surgeries." Like I said before,=
him not knowing what he's talking about and acting like a jerk about it is=
what bugs me. I can tell you I use a lot of stainless, hardened steels tha=
t don't rust when processed correctly. If the facts were plainly stated wit=
hout the condescending attitute, disgust and "shock" it'd be acceptable to =
me. The attitude doesn't help anyone and frankly causes me to post this stu=
ff on a message board :)
Ben,

I left you a voicemail about this. I will reiterate that I am not only surp=
rised, but shocked that these were taken to a miicroscope. This is not the =
norm. we have sold over 300 sets and most with screws packaged the way you =
received them, and no one has complained.

As stated, you will find scratches on all burr sets as they are placed in b=
ins. Also indicated was that these burrs are made of hardened steel - steel=
oxidizes and rusts. The rust will wear away after some grinding of coffee.

The burrs are not perfect to the naked eye, and definitely not to a microsc=
ope.

As indicated, these parts are not returnable as advertised here in the diff=
erent fields:
 http://www.1st-line.net/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=69-000-032&type=store
Unless there is a major defect as approved  by us and rancilio, a repalce=
ment would be offered.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss, please call me.

Robert,
The naked eye was able to see dings on the sharp edges in the sandwich
bagged burrs. Not so with the Mazzer blister pack burrs, each cutting edge
looked perfect.
I found this site which shows some Mazzer packaging:http://coffeetime.wikidot.com/mazzer-burrsWhere the guy goes into a long discussion about aftermarket burrs.
The espressoparts guy told me there were only 3 burr manufacturers on the
planet and insisted that what I received is how he gets them direct from
Italy, in a big bag all loosely packed. I have a hard time believing that,
especially since he said that is the ONLY way he receives them yet in one
day he had a Mazzer packaged set for me.
1st line, although arrogant with respect to the Rocky burrs in this thread,
did have and sell ONLY Mazzer packaged burrs.

While this thread was winding down, I was patiently waiting for replacement
burrs for my Gaggia MDF. Backordered and with no notification from Whole
Latte Love - until I prompted them. Irritating.
So, based on others' experiences, I wondered in what form my burrs would
arrive. The box showed up on the porch this evening. Didn't sound good
from the start. I heard the distinctive clinking of burrs hitting burrs.
Upon opening the box I found 4 burrs in one sealed, unmarked bag. Nothing
separating them. Clearly they were repackaged as they likely don't come in
sets of 4. (I did order 2 pairs). This bag was in the bottom of the box
with one bubble bag above it. Not impressed by WLL's care and feeding of
the customer or the burrs.
So now I wonder if these possibly dinged, possibly cheap knock-off burrs are
any better than the worn out burs I'm replacing. It will be interesting to
compare the amount of fines in the grounds with old and "new" burrs. I'll
take some close up shots and post them if there's anything of interest. Of
course, I'm hoping to >taste< the difference, regardless of the burrs'
appearance.
We shall see....

I'm a little late on this, but found the messages on packaging of
replacement burrs interesting. I ordered Rocky replacement burrs earlier in
the summer from, I think, Chris Coffee. The arrived in the little plastic
bag with a piece of cardboard between them. I actually sent them a note
asking if, in fact, these were new. They didn't look dirty, but I expected
something nice and shiny and obviously new. The email assured me they were
new. I don't use the rocky for espresso anymore, so I didn't worry about it
too much.
Last week, I just got a new set for my Cimbali Jr from Espresso Parts NW,
and they were as others described, just two burrs in a small plastic bag.
Dull again, and no protective cardboard. I didn't look super close, but they
definitely felt sharper than my old ones. Replacement was a piece of cake.
Which brings me to one other question. On my Cimbali grinder, with the
original burrs, my zero point was right about zero. I've been using it
between 1 and 2 the last few months when I got my La Spaziale machine. Now
with the new burrs, my zero point is about 5.5. I'm grinding about 7.5 to 8
now, so I guess that is a good thing. A bit surpising that zero isn't closer
to 0.

Not specific to Cimbali grinder. Six or seven Rocky burr sets over the years
have had true zero range from -1 to 17.
