Topic: OT: mcd's coffee (9 msgs / 192 lines)
1) From: Tomenid
Not that I consider any of this off topic since it deals with the world of
coffee. As a former political media guy I can tell you that the McD commercial
is absolutely brilliant. It's more anti-snob and anti-intellectual than
anti-female and because it uses humor it absolutely crushes the opposition. One
of the reasons I won one of the first major anti-second hand smoking campaigns
in the country was by destroying the opposition with a comic ad when they
tried to equate perfume with secondhand smoke. McD's isn't going after the Sweet
Maria's crowd because they know they''ll never get them and they know that
those people who might be offended by the ad will probably never--or at least
regularly--patronize them. They are trying to woo people away from Starbucks
and since as an independent businessman I would never enter a Starbucks
that's fine with me. (Coffee houses ought to reflect the community).

I respectfully beg to differ--they are trying to convince their
regular customers, who would never be caught dead in an "elitist"
place like Starbucks, to switch from regular joe with their Egg
McMuffins to their specialty drinks; as well as trying to woo those
who might like to try cappas and lattes but mistrust the
intellectualist atmosphere of coffeehouses. I don't think that the
average Starbucks customers mind that jazz music or pseudo-coffeehouse
vibe one bit--to the contrary, I can't see any of them grabbing their
laptops and iPods and flocking to MickeyD's to do their sipping and
surfing. (They'd tend to go to Steak & Shake or Burger King for their
fast food anyway).

I'm going to jump in on this one. While I agree that they are trying to
encourage their existing customers to buy more expensive drinks (expanding
the market), I definitely think they are also trying to convince casual
starbucks/peets/dunks/etc visitors (the ones who buy their drink to go,
rather than sitting and laptoping) that they are a viable alternative
(stealing the market). The only chain with more convenient locations than
starbucks or Dunks (in the NE) would be McDs. So if you're not going to
your chain coffeehouse as a destination (wifi, etc), why not stop at the
more convenient McDs?
Personally, I don't think they're trying to make an anti-elitist statement,
but rather just playing on satire as way to catch people's attention.

Great opinion, Tom! To quote Obama, " You can put lipstick on a pig, but it
is still a pig" McD's has enough to worry about than try to steal Starbux
customers away.....the true Starbux user is not interested in McCrappe
anyway. Who would want to smell grease and filthy restrooms when you sip on
a latte? Oh, yeah....McD's regular user....and they don't like the new
McCoffe, from what I am told.
Just my opinion, but the majority of US coffee drinkers appreciate the "west
coast" roast that is offered at Starbucks. They designed their roasting
process after Peete's coffee in the early 70's. The coffee world needed
Starbucks to hit it big in the US. America is a nation of consumers, and
Starbux reflects that attitude. Coffee has never been this popular in this
country. They just did not need to grow on every corner.
Certainly the corner store Micro Roaster does a better job with their
roasts, and those of us who roast ourselves appreciate those cafes. But Joe
America KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS corporate dining. Is it wrong or right?
Both places offer jobs to the communities, right? Consistency in food and
beverage is the winner here, Tom, and I hope you do the "Pepsi Challenge"
with McCoffee and S-bucks someday. Comparing home roast versus either of
those is oranges and apples. I, myself, stick to my own roasted beans, but
also respect what has transformed an instant coffee drinking nation into
grind-and-brew coffee. Hey, St-bux even made Dinkin' change their mode of
operation on the East Coast roast!!!
Congrats of the award for the second hand smoke comic!
Cheers!

Tom -
I agree they are not going after the SM crowd, but because:
a) They probably don't even know we exist
b) Our number is so small compared to McD's customer base they wouldn't care
anyway

What? Way to go - Steak & Shake. In Sight, it must be Right.
But I don't think they're within a thousand miles of us in Denver town. They
were centered in Indiana, I think. Steak burgers- my faves. Loved their
chili too.
The Scotchman in Denver had great chili too- Years Ago. Scraped, now it's a
Wendy's I think.

Tempt me!
A little much of a Day Trip for Der Alte Fortz on the Milwaukee Vibrator,
total fun for about 350mi.
Could have had a lot of fun with the 105 octane E-85 in the 406 that's my
current image. Kid brother found out it needed a full load of oil at higher
crankshaft speeds... The same sold my XKE for me.
