Again the ad is mostly intended to give you a laugh by hitting  various 
satirical points. My wife, for example, might wince at tossing a book  aside but 
laughed at the reference to jazz. And, yes, they are targeting  Starbuck casuals 
by showing that they can get their designer coffees at a McDs  as well,  and 
can just go to whichever outfit  is closer. They  aren't going after the truly 
serious coffee snobs because they know they don't  have a chance. They aren't 
going after the people who patronize local  independent coffee shops because 
they don't have a chance of making any inroads.  They aren't attacking women, 
just saying that there are different types out  there. They really do conduct 
major market studies before they do something like  this just as I used to 
study our private polls before doing political ads, not  to conform our positions 
to the poll results but to tailor the approach so that  we could most 
effectively make our point (a campaign is lost when you try to be  something you 
aren't). National chains have a problem with customer loyalty and  often it's just 
a case of going to which outfit is the most convenient. McD  is known for 
trying different approaches to capture customers--some work, some  don't. Part of 
it is also designed to be fun, borrowing a bit from the beer  commercials 
that don't really say this beer is good because of how its made but  because when 
you drink it with friends you have a good time.
 
And back on topic (not that this is really off), had a really nice Guat.  
this morning, roasted to near FC in the Gene, and brewed in the Techniworm. When  
you get it right, it's so wonderful. It's enough to turn one into an 
overboard  coffeeholic.
