Topic: I did it...Rocky grinder heading my way. (10 msgs / 194 lines)
1) From: Seth Grandeau
After reading for months about how the grinder is the most important item, I
finally overcame my gut instinct to not buy an expensive grinder and pulled
the trigger. The issue that put me over the edge was the number of vacuum
pots that were ruined, when coffee dust clogged the cory rod and the pot
stalled. I noticed that our hosts had a used Rocky on the "on sale" page
and I grabbed it. Not quite sure how I'm going to explain to my better half
why I'm already upgrading on a grinder (Baratza) that is not even a year
old... :)
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!

Wives have a tendency to come around on price as the coffee improves. The
main difficulty for me is kitchen space and using her towels. I bought my
own kitchen towels and promised our next house will have a coffee room/
library.

I like the coffee room idea. :) Space I'm OK with. I have a coffee cart in
the kitchen. If I remove my old grinder and my Nespresso Espresso maker
(unused since I got into homeroasting), I'm fine.
She's definitely coming around on the whole coffee thing. It used to be
that she only liked Kona. Then, as I started to introduce Kona-like coffees
(Guatemalans and Panamas), she's expanded her horizons. She still doesn't
love the fruity Africans, the way I do, but she's getting there. This
morning, she had a cup of Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe. She gave me a very nice
assessment (it had great aroma and strength, but a little too acidic for
her).

In the Cloverdale/Surrey area there are a lot of homes with a spice kitchen.
This is a smaller kitchen off the main kitchen. It is used when cooking (as
the name suggests) very spicy food like curries so the smells don't get
absorbed into the rest of the home. After getting into home roasting I now
think these are a great idea. A kitchen dedicated to home roasting.

To all of you who say the grinder is the most important piece of
equipment...You were right and I was wrong.
With my old Solis Maestro, even with the burrs touching, I could not get an
espresso shot to run longer than 15 seconds. With my new Rocky, I started
on setting 8 and I was shocked at the powder that came out! Even at 11, my
shot ran verrrry slow. much fine tuning is ahead of me, I'm sure, but I
feel like I have a tool that's up to the job!

Seth,
It is amazing the difference the grinder makes! I am enjoying a well
ground cup of Rwanda this morning. The complexity of flavors, lack of
bitterness and perfect extraction happened because of a nice
consistent grind.

Les,
The best part is, I'm finally going to give my beautiful koa wood tamper a
decent work out. It had been gathering dust for some time after early
disappointments with espresso.

Seth,
Welcome to the CGSC, Coffee Grinder Snobs Club. I wrote the
motto: Remember the espresso machine is an accessory to the grinder,
not the other way around.
