Hey listerinos,
I was thinking about the Ethiopian Koratie DP, as the subject line
indicates!! Anyway, I was curious about people's roast levels for this
coffee. I really enjoy this coffee, and am inspired by Seth's raves in
another post. So I would like to hear some input from people who have
enjoyed this coffee as much as I have. What have people enjoyed about this
coffee? What roast level have you taken it to? I'd be interested to see
how different people have been enjoying this coffee.
I have recorded 2 roasts with my new roasting setup, both are 275g roasts
(which yields 1/2lb in the end).
My first roast, first crack occurred at 9:30 at 400F. I stretched the roast
to 12:55 and dropped at 420F, and I was calling it C.
Second roast, first crack was 400F also, but at 8:55. The end of roast was
4 minutes later, at 12:55, at 434F. A solid C+.
I really enjoyed both roasts. The first lacked body but was really singing
with fruited berry flavors. The second roast had more body but more muted
flavors. I think I would call it "jammy", more of a mix of flavors.
When I roast this again, I will be shooting for a drop temp of about
425-427. Maybe the best of both worlds.
How have others roasted this coffee? What did you really like about it?
I can't wait to hear about your experiences. Thanks to Seth for his
enthusiasm. I ordered my fiver a couple of weeks ago...

Bill,
My most recent roast (and it's even better today!) was in the Behmor, P1,
1/2 lb of bean, 1 lb setting, B profile (just so I have 20:00 on the clock,
which makes the math a little easier). I don't have my log here, but I
remember it hitting first around 11 minutes. I'll post those details
tonight. I stopped it just as first was ending, which I allowed it to
cruise to a C+.

Hey bill,
I loved the DP Koratie...my roast notes were as follows on the Behmor:
DP Koratie: 16oz on P1 at 1lb (18 min), 1st crack 4:30 to go (13:30), stopped roast 3:00 to go (15:00 but coasts for 30-60 sec). City. Pineapple, fruit cup juice. it really tasted like the juice left in a can of mixed fruits. I love fruity wild unconventional tastes.
it worked great for me at this profile which is essentially a fast ramp up. May try the P3 next...a slower ramp. I'm not sure if the slower ramp would develop the flavors more or mute the fruited high notes.
Enjoy.
