Topic: Behmor 100 roasts later (18 msgs / 569 lines)
1) From: Tolar, William R
Enjoying Panama Esmeralda Gesha lot # 10 my 100th roast (figured 100 had t=
o be special) WOW best Gesha roast yet, took it 1:40 after first crack sta=
rted (P1) with 2 days rest. I mainly roast ½ or ¾ lb. roasts. Only one =
roast was trashed but only due to a dreaded Err 6 motor problem. Emailed =
Joe right away and asked if he would send a new motor as I felt I would hav=
e no problem replacing it, (also didn't want to ship my baby all the way fr=
om California and back she gets lonely) ;- ) Joe was more than happy to =
do so, he also included some great instructions and pictures, along with a =
follow up email to make sure I was happy and the repair was a success(it wa=
s !!) Try doing that with any other small appliance manufacturer. So far I =
have no complaints, my machine works as advertised. I do one pound roasts w=
hen I need to but I like smaller batches and the variety of all the differe=
nt flavors that SM offers. Later I will post a few profiles that I have had=
very good luck with even though most of these coffees are long gone. A lot=
of the time my roasts are a W A G or while roasting I might stop it due to=
the smell BTW some of these have been the best. Well sorry for the long po=
st just wanted to share a little of my journey with all of you. PS if you a=
re thinking about getting a Behmor JUST DO IT !! sure it has a few quirks b=
ut the pros out way the cons by a mile, for $300 dollars its worth every pe=
nny plus some. Even a beginner like me can roast AMAZING coffee. ROAST # 10=
1 will be Ethiopia DP-Dale Yirga Alem it sounds great by your reviews. Reg=
ards Ray PSS next step will be a USRC may need your advice Les sounds li=
ke the perfect upgrade plan :-) =

2) From: Seth Grandeau
Just curious, when you say 1:40 after first crack started, is that from the
first outlier or from when 1st starts to roll? My lot 10 order just showed
up and I'm thinking about how I want to roast it. Thanks for the advice and
report on your successes.

If you can afford it would be a move you'd never regret. Close analogy would
be like cooking on a cheap electric range compared to a professional class
gas range. All about ample power, good monitoring feedback and precision
repeatable control. Just make sure you specify in detail who get's the USRC
in your Will 'cuz it'll likely last generations! Quite certain Les will
agree.

4) From:
My first roast was 1:15 after first crack started ( 1st 2:43, EOR 1:30) on =
P1 (8 oz at 1/2 setting). That gave me some amazing fruit and florals...but=
some sour tastes for at least 3 days...which I reported.
I did another one with 1st crack at 2:45 and EOR at 1 min to go. I sent tha=
t one again and heard that it was well received.
I count first not from the outlier...but maybe 3-4 snaps or so into it when=
I know it is for real.
Dean De Crisce
Sent from a Treo phone.

5) From: Rich
There is a table of times between 1st and 2nd for 1/4, 1/2, and 1 lb in
the Behmor instructions. That time is measured from the first outlier of
1st to the onset of 2nd. I have found it to be quite accurate. Don't
forget to adjust for the post roast coast.

Totally agree Mike! I had a new USRC roaster purchaser drop by for
some instruction and roast play. The only regret he has is he won't
be getting his until next month as it is still being made. His
comment on the Idido Misty Valley we roasted that he took home was,
"The IMV is extraordinary. It's the best I've had; even my wife
noticed it yesterday."

Yeah - sometimes that first outlier is actually one of the beans that fell
thru the drum onto the chaff collector and since it gets "full sunshine" and
no agitiation it will crack early. (Sometimes a full minute or so early.)

8) From: Rich
Load drum, install in Behmor, leave chaff collector out, close door, hit
cool, wait 5 min or so, hit stop, open door and remove drum and beans
etc on bottom. Roast as normal. Use the "outlier" and the time chart.
It works.

Doug that is a bit of a short answer! A USRC is one of the finest
little roasters around. The one pound model or half kilo, is perfect
for home roasting. It has awesome control, flexibility, and
repeatability. I am enjoying a Kenya Githumbwini this morning that
simply has the taste buds dancing. One of the best roasts of this
bean I have ever hand because of the great profile that Doug shared
with me. Simply awesome flavor with no hint of bitterness or
astringency. Sweet nice honey after-taste to boot! James, here is a
link to my first roast on my USRC half-kilo.

Worked for me on my work computer. I think Alchemist found the
problem. You would have to talk to Doug about a profile on a P1 for
the Githumbwini. I have not used my Poppery for a long time.

afford a USRC .5k roaster:-)
