Topic: Sonofresco Roaster on ebay (12 msgs / 278 lines)
1) From: Seth Grandeau
I periodically check ebay for that typo that will allow me to pick up a USRC
1/2 kilo roaster for only $100. Needless to say, I haven't found it yet.
:) But I did see a Sonofresco roaster listed. This is right from the
seller's description of this 1 lb roaster:
This is an entry level machine for the home hobby roaster who isn't worried
about perfect consistency, doesn't need to "tweak" their roast levels and is
used to the flavors produced by the hot air process. The hot air process
("Fluid Bed") works like a popcorn popper. As a matter of fact it works
exactly like the little Westbend Popcorn Poppers by blowing hot air through
the beans.
It sounded to me like the hot air version of a Behmor. Then I went ot look
at the price. $2900!!! I guess my view of this hobby is different from
others. :)

FYI: We're actually going to be selling our Syd and Jerrys, AKA,
Coffee Kinetics roaster, aka the old name for Sonofresco. It's a
beefy 1 Lb air roaster (it yields 1 Lb so can take a bit more.
There's a few odd things about it, but it would be great for a small
shop. I was looking for $1250 for it. That's a pretty great price
considering what it is and what it can do. We havent used it at all
as of late, and not that much before that. Lately, we had problems
with it shutting off, but I am sure this has to do with the fact we
have a flexicbe piece of dryer vent hooked up, and theres some back
pressure on the air flow. It requires little set-up, but it's good to
have a semi-fixed vent for it, that doesnt create any back pressure.

I have some questions that maybe you would answer.
I know nothing about this roaster, so apoligies in advance for naive questions.
How does it work? electricity? Gas?
How big and how heavy is it? Massive shipping costs?
Why did you not use it? Batches too small for your needs? You prefer another small batch roaster?
Could I use it under a powerful hood, or does it need its own vent system?
Thanks

I have some kinetics parts if anyone needs them. A small shop was using it
and decided they had made all the money they could from the roaster so they
threw it away a piece at a time. When I saved it all that was left was the
burner and blower.

Yep - it is not drum roaster and there's basically no profiling of
the roast. But it has one of the better roast flavors of any air
roaster, and they certainly built them well. The fact that it's 110 +
this beefy natural gas burner makes it much more of a "real roaster"
than if it had been designed as all-electric. It has its pros and
cons, and naturally you would chose a batch drum roaster like yours
for serious retailing of roaster coffee. -Tom

I have one.
Minimal (very) profiling can be accomplished w-external exhaust.
I have a Dayton exhaust blower powered via Variac.
Just enough to slow the roast enough to obtain light roasts.
This one seems to be better tailored for dark roasts.

It looks to me like they are asking $100 less than list for a very used
roaster. On Sonofresco's site they show it for $2995 (Sept discount price of
$2495). And they say it needs a new roasting chamber for $150. I'll pass on
this one!
Thanks anyway;-)

I've had roasts from them too and agree they do a good job. But once you've
had good profile control there's no turning back! (Even if it was only with
1/2# Frankenformer Rosto roasting before CCR HT and USRC 3k:-) I imagine
they could be modified to control the burner for profile control. No reason
why not, the burner on the USRC 3k is variable controlled. I'm sure Mike
(just plain) could have it PID controlled in no time!
And $1250 for a quality commercial grade 1.25# greens batch air roaster
someone should grab it, seriously! That's a good deal.
