Topic: Behmor small-mesh drum failure? (7 msgs / 115 lines)
1) From: Lindsay Murphy
Hi everyone--
Has anyone else noticed a problem with the Behmor small-mesh drum
breaking its top hinges? Mine quit after ten or twelve half-pound
batches roasted - certainly not a significant strain on the drum.
The fixed part of the top failed at its weld points against the mesh,
breaking off chunks of mesh and leaving two large-ish holes where the
hinge had been attached. The same problem appears to be occurring,
albeit at a slower rate, where the mesh is welded to the stirring vanes
and longitudinal struts. Since Sweet Maria's is currently out of the
small drum and the coffees I prefer tend to fall straight out of the big
drum, I've got mine jury-rigged back together with 14-ga wire and
heat-resistant tape (!).
I can't imagine this is an expected failure or a normal mode of
operation. Can anyone else advise?
Thanks!

Lindsay,
I have done about about 20 roasts with my small drum and have had no
problems. You might want to contact the Behmor support line. Everyone
speaks highly of their Customer support.

Call Joe. Over a hundred roasts with no problem. Bad welds?

I've got 68 roasts on the small mesh drum. Welds still look okay.

Does that tape add to the high or low notes of the flavor profile? :-)

I've done 20+ roasts in my small grid drum and no issues here. Sounds like
an over heated weld at the time of production. Return it for a new one.

*laughs*
Actually, it didn't taste like much of anything. After completing my
"Red Green repair," I ran the drum through a cleaning cycle to burn off
anything nasty that might have been on the tape and wire, and after that
it was fine. Caught a decent amount of chaff, but otherwise fine.
Then again, I used Vypar silicone repair tape (rated to 500 deg F)
instead of the good old silver standby. Some things even duct tape
won't fix. :-)
