Topic: Roastin' with bees (5 msgs / 66 lines)

I know I have seen discussions on the list before about how roasting tends to
attract mosquitos, well it seems bees like it too! I have done about 100
roasts with my Popcorn pumper and have seen mosquitos galore, but never bees.
Well, guess what I was roasting both times they showed up..... Ethiopia Koratie
DP! I guess they were attracted to the fruity nectar themselves.

A year ago, I would have been chagrined, because I am allergic to
bees, but now I am heartened by every bee I see because we have lost
so many of them to colony collapse disorder. My garden did not do as
well this year as it usually does--fewer berries and grapes than last
year. I'm sure it was due in large part to decreased pollination.

I noticed a spider had set up shop just above where I shake out the chaff,
post-roast. I don't know if it correlates, but he's a pretty fat & happy
spider and there's always something caught in his web. :)

I get wasps around when I roast. They aren't aggressive, but they're
definitely around much more than when I'm not roasting. Seems to attract
them like wine and beer does.

I think heat and scent attracts flying/pollinating insects in general.
