Behmor with the above modification or if you can afford the Hot top are
wonderful machines. I own both. Service on either is great. If you have
problems with the Behmor Joe calls you directly. I just had a board go out
on my Hot top and Michael is sending me a new one free of charge no
questions asked. With any roaster never leave them unattended and be
scrupulous about cleaning the chaff out. I love the service and results on
both roasters. If roasting outdoors is a problem go Behmor. If not and you
can afford it go Hot Top

I got a HotTop this year, and love it. It's the first homeroasting
device I've owned that I haven't had the desire to take apart and try
to make better. The biggest downside is the price. (My history is a
Hearthware Precision, IRoast, homemade grill drum, and now the
HotTop). It has a nice window that lets you see the progress of the
roast, and a great deal of control.
Online reviews need to be considered carefully. They sometimes get
spammed by competitors.

If you really want to see the bean, my USRC one pound roaster has a
sight glass in it, as well as a tryer to pull beans out of the roaster
for both a good visual as well as smell test during the roast. It runs
very quiet, and you won't have to worry about upgrade fever or having
it wear out.

Carol,
A quick comment on the GeneCafe. It is very well made and is highly regarded by many members of this group. Yes, the
glass does get hot, but that's why they put a handle on it. The handle doesn't get hot at all.

Ah come on Les give the Newbie a break:-) It took you 20+ years home
roasting to take the plunge forking over mucho bucks succumbing to the lure
of a true commercial quality roaster. I'm quite certain a HotTop will
suffice for now and keep upgraditis at bay for a number of years.
FWIW I've run HotTops very hard with nary a fire. Like many many 8 to 12hr
non-stop sessions cranking out as many as 36 back to back 330gr over sized
batches pushing moderate 130v over voltage the entire time. Is a HotTop
built as well as a US Roaster Corp? Of course not, but IMO the HotTop is the
Best off the shelf home roaster out there. The USRC 0.5k is a commercial
sample roaster that extreme home roasters seeking the ultimate upgrade shoot
for, usually after winning the Lottery:-)

I bought the GC then the Behmor 8 months later to roast indoors during
the freezing Utah winters.
I like the GC more because it offers absolute control over the roast
profile with two simple knobs that are easily adjusted on the fly. No
mysterious multitude of buttons to use in conjunction with each other
as one must master on the Behmor.
Also, the glass drum doesn't let peaberry beans fall through and the
chaff containment system is mess-free. I cool by hitting the button
to emergency stop, then dump the beans and replace the drum to restart
the cooling process so I don't fry the temp sensors.
It's no problem to handle the drum while hot without a glove, the
handle design makes it easy to avoid touching the glass. Sometimes
though the machine walls will warp inward just a bit while the machine
is hot and it can be tough to get the drum back in to begin the
cooling process. You also need to make sure a bean doesn't get stuck
in the lid when you dump or the lid won't seat all the way and you
will have a hard time reseating the drum in the machine.
The above process can be a bit frenetic if you are trying to assist
the beans in cooling. My preferred process is to dump them into a
stainless bowl, replace the drum and restart the cool cycle, then dump
beans back and forth from one stainless bowl to another 10 times or so
for a fast cool. Don't tell me I don't need to do it. I love the
noise of beans on steel and it's part of my roasting ritual.
If the above sounds a bit daunting the Behmor may be a good choice -
especially if you want to roast indoors. Also, the GC is louder and
can mask a delicate 2nd crack: I find myself with my ear to the GC's
chaff collector at the end of the roast straining to hear the early
onset of 2C. I would consider the Behmor to have an advantage for a
somewhat-sight-impaired person as the machine is more quiet and will
give your ears a chance to make up for your eyes. I'm still in the
early stages of using the Behmor and enjoying learning how to let it
master me but I have a long way to go and I'm still a bit frustrated.
If I had to pick one of them and lived in a more temperate climate the
GC would win hands down for me.

Carol,
I'll jump in with my 2 cents worth. I purchased a GeneCafe about three
months ago and I've truly enjoyed it. This is after graduating from a hot
air popcorn popper and an I Roast 2. I've probably done 30+ roasts and am
well pleased. It would indeed make a wonderful Christmas gift.

US Roaster Corp built in Oklahoma City. It's .5 kilo sample roaster with a
5000 Btu burner. Fully adjustable air flow and gas pressure for
very accurate and repeatable roasts. I think there are about 6 people
that have them
on the list. I have roasted about 90 lbs of coffee and still have more
than 1/2 of standard propane
tank left. Here is a link.http://www.usroastercorp.com/sample.htmDoug

Hi Carol:
WELCOME to the world of roasting. I own and have used all of your mentioned
roasters.
To begin with Carol I have never had a fire in a Hot Top and I roast to a
darker degree...I am on my second generation Hot Top these days and fire is
not an issue unless you add a few drops of kerosene to your green beans!!
<Snip>
the Gene Cafe will suit your needs. Total control for you. Fear not about
manuals that suggest you don't do this or don't do that, none of these guys
want to get sued.
Trust me you would not pick up the Gene Cafe glass without using the handle
or \some gloves. Gloves are a MUST with any roaster.
Tom has a great review, check out a complete consumer review of the Gene
Cafe by Eddie Dove at:http://homeroasters.org/php/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id6&thread_idG3My first roaster was a Fresh Roast (the christmas gift from hell) and I
still use it for fast roasted when I have forgotten to roast for myself.
Roast it at 5am and drink it at 5:10am...
good luck Carol. Enjoy.
regards,
ginny

I don't have any experience with the Dedirich roaster. I did
use part of the USRC fan and separated that portion out and
tied it to the RK Drum for a variable speed to control the
airflow and had excellent control and better results with the RK Drum.
I was in the process of changing the gas valve control on the grill
for finite control when Ron passed away.

5gal/20LB propane tanks common with home grills. (Though with all newer
tanks, which is all they'll fill, they have built in safety fill limiter and
aren't filled with 5gal anymore...) I can roast over 300# on a tank with
USRC 3k, or about 5 cents propane cost per LB roasted.

I have the Gene Cafe. I just purchased it a little over a month ago. I've
already roasted about 15 batches. It's definitely easy to see. Even though
they say to use gloves before grabbing the carafe, I haven't been doing
that. The composite material is much cooler than the 140 degrees (cool down
temperature inside carafe at shutdown). The handle hasn't been that hot.
The top has been a little bit hotter when I open it, but only need to grab
and pull open. I like the machine. There is a little carryover, but I'm
learning to compensate.
