Topic: Update to brewer comparison AND a review of "hand-held (44 lines)
1) From: Kris McN
Hi All,
In the latest Cooks Illustrated there's a follow-up to last issue's article
comparing drip brewers. Recall that Technivorm was the only brewer of those
compared that both had the right brew temp and time, and therefor produced
the superior cup, in their opinion. They had a brief report this time on
whether or not pre-heating the water improved the brew from the loser
brewers. They heated water on the stove to ~100' before putting it in the
brewers. They noticed a "marked improvement" in brew quality (better, but
still not great). They note that this method goes against the explicit
instructions from all the brewer manufactuers to start with cold water
(which is probably to keep people from putting water from the hot tap in,
which...gross).
Also, they had a brief review of two "hand-held" espresso makers; the
Aeropress and the Handpresso. Now, we can argue with their use of the term
"espresso makers", but ignoring the terminology and just looking at the
comparison: Neither was found to be as good as real espresso, but they
found the Aeropress to make a delicious, flavorful "shot" and recommended
it. They described it as having the heavy body of FP but with the cleanness
of drip, which pretty much nails it. The Handpresso, on the other hand was
ok, great aroma, but not great flavor (muddy and bitter). The Handpresso
uses pods, while they put fresh ground into the Aeropress, so the results
are not suprising. Maybe if you could make your own pods for the
Handpresso... Either way, the $30 for the Aeropress vs. $150 for the
Handpresso (their reported price, though I see it listed for as "little" as
$129) really put the nail in the coffin for the Handpresso.
Just FYI.
List traffic has really been slow lately - do you suppose more people got
accidentally booted off the list like me and haven't made it back on yet?
Or is there just not that much to say about coffee lately?
Best,
Kris McN
