Hi Bruce,
I bought both of the HotTops before there was a Behmor roaster. About ten
years ago I bought a Unimax2000, which still does work for the most part.
One of the biggest problems with the Unimax was cooling, having to stop the
roast early and let it coast to the finish. My roasts were very inconsistent
and roasting a COE would have made me pretty nervous.
No problem at all with the HotTop and consistent finishes. If I blow it,
which rarely happens, it is operator error, something stupid that I did. I
always set the time high and stop the roast manually when the aroma, color
and temperature are what I want. Not much guesswork but all the control I
really need.
Also, that was my complaint about the price increases when HotTop dropped
the models with basic controls. I paid more for the HotTop than I would for
a Behmor, but not close to 3X. And without:
Color LCD display
- Built-in line voltage control, no variac needed
- Built-in temperature safety features. User must press any key to continue
roasting if darker roast needed when Hottop temperature display 415 F,
otherwise Hottop will dump the beans and shut off the machine automatically.
- Target time, target temperature, fan speed, or heater power can be changed
during roast
- Adjusted profile can be saved and played back
My HotTops are consistent, high quality roasters at a considerably more
affordable price.

This may be a dumb question, but why would you buy a 1/2# capacity Hottop
for almost 3x the money of a 1# capacity Behmor?
(I expect this is a loaded question, please be compassionate in your
replies.)
