Although not in Manhattan, by a very long ways, I suggest that you check
restaurant supply stores. That's where we get our citric acid. If you
prefer on-line purchases, bulkfoods.com sells citric acid.

Go to a large grocery store (Gristede's) or a German or Kosher deli
with a retail dept. and look for "sour salt," which is used for
sauerbraten and pickling. It is crystalline citric acid.

What about the simple packets of cleancaf that can cheaply be bought online=

Economics. The active ingredient in Cleancafe is citric acid. Cleancafe is a
couple of dollars for an ounce. Citric acid is about 3 dollars a pound.

Angela,
You might try Fairway on the upper west side, look for sour salt. As
others have said, you can sometimes get it at beer and wine making
stores as well, (you can get it easily online if you can't find it
local).
