Topic: An awakening! (10 msgs / 185 lines)
1) From: Bob Brashear
Just got back from a fencing tournament in the Chicago area. Heading
back to Union Station this morning, my son and I found Intelligentsia on
Jackson Blvd. Popped in and discovered a version of heaven.
First, the BEST espresso I've ever had. I know why you guys on the Dark
Side are there. When I get the money, I will join you. Had the Black Cat
blend. My son had a cappuccino that he said was "ok" (not a real coffee
drinker. This may change after what happened next). Three espressos
later, had a good Yirgacheffe from a TV and then, my son tried the
Yirgacheffe from a Clover and fell in love. So did I. We are no longer
"Clover Virgins".
The people there were friendly and willing to talk coffee, even during a
busy morning. All had heard of SM and congratulated me on my obvious
sophistication and savior faire in choosing Tom and Maria as my
supplier. Two Clover cups later, we reluctantly departed to catch the
bus home.
I think there is a Clover over in St. Paul (will not step inside of a
Charbucks). The boy wants some coffee!
BTW, tournament didn't go too well. Some high powered gunslingers.
Learned some things, though.

Bob,
I dug out a post by Jared and was ready to send it when I realized
that you were one of the principles in the discussion. Here was the
part of interest (who has a Clover), in case it slipped your mind:
Kopplins in the Highland park area of Saint Paul

Me and my Isomac Tea would love to host however I am moving my family
into my mother in laws basement for the next few months until our new
home is done being built. So I am a bit homeless until August. Ideas
to meet in public include Kopplins in the Highland park area of Saint
Paul because they have a Clover brewer I am interested in seeing. Or
in South St Paul there is Blacksheep coffee where I could see if Peter
Middlecamp would make us some of his barista competition drinks. I
know St. Paul is out of the way for Bob and Barbara and me but I am
willing to drive for a good coffee experience. I can not do it this
weekend, June 10 or July4-18 but am otherwise pretty open. Jared

What a coincidence! I was there today too, about 2:15, after choral
rehearsal for the Chicago Bar Assn. show. I, too, had Yirg from the
Clover. But you know what? I like my Aeropress better--richer and more
flavorful.

Ah HA! Dredging stuff from dark, distant memories. My son thanks you. I
thank you. My dog thanks you. My wife thanks you. My third cousin twice
removed thanks you. If I think of anyone else, I'll let you know.
Btw, thanks. :)

We hit there about 8 am. Yokels from Minneapolis in the BIG CITY.
Chicago has mass transit that works, unlike a certain midwest city to
the northwest of Chicago that I will not name.
May have to break down and get an Aeropress!

Tell me what a clover is. I'm very familiar with St Paul having grown up in
Stillwater and get back there often. It seems that General Mills has a
Starbucks substitute all over the North Country. If I was a bit younger, I'd
probably remember the name.

It's a $11,000, single cup cup, fully automated coffee maker that CharBucks
bought out. Here is an articlehttp://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/magazine/16-08/mf_cloverOn Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 10:00 PM, Bruce Garley wrote:

It's sorta like a giant combination bean scale/grinder/computerized
robotic inverted Aeropress. Said General Mills rival to the Green
Mermaid is Caribou Coffee (aka the Blue Moose).

I live in Chicago and Intelligentsia is great. There is another place that
is as good and I like better called Metropolis at Granville and Broadway.
Burlap bags of unroasted beans are all around the shop waiting for roasting.

They're four blocks away from me. When I run out of Monkey and the
ingredients for my Rocket Fuel espresso blend, I roast their
Greenline. And, BTW, the Fetco-brewed coffee that comes out of their
airpots tastes richer and more flavorful to me than did that Yirg from
Intelly's Clover yesterday (no varietal characteristics showed up at
all until the last ounce was cold).
