Topic: Question about Guatemala Oriente DP (5 msgs / 77 lines)
1) From: Jeff Holder
I've been roasting Guatemala Oriente in a GeneCafe. I've noticed that the
chaff doesn't clear the roasting chamber very quickly resulted in heavier
smoke than with other beans. Any suggestions? I'm roasting about 250g at a
time. Would it help for me to reduce the amount of beans or is this just
unique to this particular bean? Anyone else find this to be true?

No suggestions, other than to say I think the extra smoke translates
to the cup flavor. Not a bad thing IMO

Hey Jeff,
The Gene Cafe roasting drum has a line on it indicating maximum fill
for Dry Process coffees; not that I have ever paid much attention to
it. For better roast control and reduction in undesirable roasting
attributes you described, try roasting 1/2 pound (~227 gram) batches,
which is also suggested in the manual. Doing so also splits the bags
of beans from Sweet Maria's evenly leaving not left overs. :-)
Hope this helps.
Eddie

I've roasted quite a few batches of the Oriente DP. I haven't taken the
batch passed 240g and noticed that there was a lot of chaff buildup.
Smaller batch might help. Smoke was a little heavier but not too bad.

Thanks everyone - I'll work on the smaller batches.
