Topic: Election Day cup (21 msgs / 418 lines)
1) From: Kris McN
Hi All,
I'm enjoying a cup of El Salvador "Aida's Grand Reserve" this morning.
Roasted to FC in the Behmor and brewed in the TV. It's a bit early yet (the
roast is only 36 hours old), and I know it will really be something in a day
or so, but right now it's a great morning drinkin' coffee; clean, and
smooth, and little peppery.
Even though Oregon is all mail-in voting, I like to drop my ballet off in
person on election day. I do miss those little "I voted" stickers, though.
Go vote!

just a double shot of my Rocket Fuel Blend--40% Brazil, 10% ea. India
Premium Robusta and Aged Sumatra, 30% Monsooned Java Arabica. (Will
have to resort to Red Line when I run out, alas). Tummy a bit touchy
(entire family is down with a GI bug/Electionitis--my elderly f-i-l is
in the hospital being treated for dehydration), so I hope it doesn't,
er, "start anything." But I had to have it for the sake of my lungs,
headache (caffeine w/d, hypoglycemia--couldn't keep anything in
yesterday).....and tastebuds. My sinuses must be getting better
because I clearly smelled it grinding and brewing, and it tasted great.
I voted last week, so today will be spent running errands, visiting
Dad in the hospital (he voted early too) and then--if my tummy holds
up--heading over to Grant Park (I printed my ticket last night).
Can't bring a lawn chair, but I also can't stand up for long periods;
so I'm calling HQ to see if I can bring my seat cane and at least use
it as a cane, or if my regular cane can snag me one of the chairs they
have set up. (I went to a Kerry rally in Madison four years ago, and
when they saw my cane they pulled Gordy & me out of line and escorted
us to the HC section right up front--got to see Springsteen and the
Foo Fighters--well, at least Grohl and his rhythm guitarist--from the
third row). Tonight Oprah will be there, and rumor is that
Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder and Springsteen will all perform (Wonder
would do "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" if and when Barack clinches it).

It was my pleasure to have two wonderful cups of pressed Datera Farms -
Yellow Bourbon before I visited my polling place in ridiculously infamous
Palm Beach County. There were 20 or 30 minutes to visit with neighbors
before casting my ballots. Typically I may pass one or two people during the
whole process.

My next door neighbor worked for his Grandmother. She was the first female
Vice President of Bank of Hawaii. He says she was tough, exacting, but
eminently fair. He said she had to be a very positive influence on him. It's
a shame she couldn't have lived another 2 days to see if he would have made
it.

I envy you Oregon voters! Here in Columbia SC I got into the line at
11:11 a.m. and didn't even get into the building until 12:06. I got
done voting and out the door a couple minutes before 1:00 p.m.
So I am just now drinking my morning cup (good thing I didn't drink it
before getting into the voting line!) I can't remember what it is,
other than Central Am. Very mellow, very tasty.

It took me longer to walk from the car to the building than it did to vote.
Maybe 10 minutes total.

In my experience, there is not an excellent place for coffee in
Columbia. About a year ago I checked out a couple places near the main
campus that aren't too bad, but the espresso got more and more bitter
as it cooled. One was Immaculate Consumption, 933 Main St, Columbia.
The other, which in my one visit had slightly less bitter espresso,
was Cool Beans Coffee Co, 1217 College St, Columbia. I would say both
are better than *$. There may be another place or two, but I haven't
been anywhere else.

The blend of Ethiopian Harar Green Stripe and Sumatra Mandheling made an
even better shot this morning, with less than four day's rest. Down to a
double + single shot basket full of beans- gotta zap some more beans in the
FR. Brazil Cerrado... Formosa this time- good right out of the roaster.

I had a cup of the Guatamala Oriente after casting my ballot, then a
shot of (getting kinda towards the edge of too-old) Ohana plus a
sprinkle of Liberica, followed by a shot of Espresso Monkey.
My officemate noted that the Ohana-Liberica mix was "pointy" versus,
the Espresso Monkey's "round" - that is, the O-L had peaks on the
chocolate & bright fruit, but not a lot of midtones (at this age),
whereas the EM (still not quite at its peak) had a nice broad sweetness.
It was all excellent coffee today, though.

We're Oregonians, too and voted last week. Can't understand why voting has
to take hours of standing in lines...it doesn't have to be and who can
afford to be away from work that long? I spent the day drinking Brazil
Cachoeira Yellow Bourbon DP, but mixed it with Colombia MC decaf later in
the day as I want to sleep sometime tonight. Still waiting for the results
of two Senate races, one in Oregon and one in Minnesota...so very close!
Take care,
