Topic: In the cup today - funky monkey (6 msgs / 112 lines)

I was running short on espresso monkey....and I had some liberica
which I've been sprinkling here and there....
The upshot is I pulled 50-50 shots of espresso monkey and liberica.
Wow. Funky Monkey indeed. Tremendously bright.
Tasty.

Today my wife and I are enjoying the previous lot of Ethiopia Organic
Idido Misty Valley DP roasted to Full City+ and rested 5 days. The
cup is less intensely fruited than it would be at a City+ roast, but
nevertheless, nicely fruited with a background of chocolate that is
quite compelling as the cup cools.

I wished I was enjoying Ethiopia IMV (07) this morning but I ruined a small
batch last night. Actually, I wouldn't be enjoying it this morning I would
wait another day but the result to me is the same-- I am mourning a batch
that went supernova in the behmor last night. I had some Brazil Pocus
deCaldas Fazenda Barreiro for this morning, and it was good, but I usually
use the IMV, Yemen, or India Mallali to blend in-grinder for a little kick.
But the poor Ethiopia batch... I weighed out a 1/4 pound batch and kicked
it off on P2, with the B16k on the grill shelf just outside the garage. My
son was busy turning a pen on the lathe in the garage which was a little
noisy. As the aroma's began to pour forth in the tanning phase I watched
and saw it was going good. The noise from the junior woodworker was going
to make it difficult to hear the cracks so I was going to use my eyes and
nose on this one.
But then my beautiful wife made it home from her class and I was completely
distracted and I followed her inside like the lost puppy I am. When I
realized my error I rushed outside but it was already in cool and the beans
were not completely done, they were a very very light and incomplete brown.
I tried to stop and restart the B16k but it was too hot to restart. Nothing
to do but to put it back in cool and let it cool down until I could restart
it.
Once I could restart it I put it on P1 and let it rip and watched it very
very closely-- no distractions this time. After many minutes they went into
crack mode and by the color and sound I was pretty sure it was only first
crack. The smoke quickly told me it could be second crack and then in an
instant the beans were black and exxon-valdez oily.
Drat!

I am actually drinking a melange roast of IMV 2007 vintage; half at City+
and half at FC+. What a great combination!

This morning I consumed 3 cups of Tanzania Blackburn Estate AA,
roasted to FC, rested 48 hrs. I'm surprised this bean hasn't been
talked up more on this list. I actually like it better than the
Koraties. It's a dense bean, relatively easy to roast IMHO, and has a
wonderfully sweet aroma and flavor.

Got a little behind on my roasting schedule. Currently quaffing shots
of a blend of 1/2 Orange Bourbon FC-, 1/4 IMV C+, and 1/4 Indo Jade
FC. Based on how it tastes right now, less than 1 hour out of the
roaster, I'm really looking forward to it in three of four days.
