YMI seems to be difficult to roast with an HWP. There are times in which
there is no first crack or at least not one that I could hear. When there
is a first crack, it is usually somewhere between four to five minutes into
the roast. Total roasting times have been between 8.5 to 10.75
minutes. The 10 min roast was overdone, or at least to my taste with a
definite burned taste. YMI is the only bean from Sweet Maria's that has
had this no first crack behavior, every now and then. My time after 1st
crack is between 3.5 minutes and 5 minutes.

This has been my experience also with my Melitta roaster. I get 2 or 3 pops
over about 30 seconds for first crack at the 3 to 3.5 minute mark. I took
one roast a few snaps into second crack at the 7 minute mark and got a burnt
rubber tire taste and smell which seemed to go away after 3 days. Using the
same profile, I cut the second roast short by stopping at 6 minutes. There
was no tire taste and the cup was good but IMO not worth the high price. I
made two lighter roasts which were also good but had light body and a
disappearing flavor effect.
I have missed first crack with a few other coffees, and it seems to
correlate with the profile. Faster heating will give more pops. I purposely
made a series of roasts with a slow low temperature heatup and had none or
just a few pops, then raised temperature to finish near second crack. These
were not as good as the faster roasts.

Interesting..... I bought some Raimy and Ismali and found the funny
smell/taste on the Raimy but not the Ismali. And it did go (mostly) away
after 3-4 days.
Overall, I prefer the Ismali.

Roasted Full City + (A few snaps into 2nd) in the Junk Yard Tow Truck
.5K, rested 5 days.
Delicious! Very full body/mouthfeel with a very slight presence of anise
and good deep, rich plum. Lingering aftertaste with a spice presence.
This one is smooooooth. I hope I can do it again...
