Topic: iRoast 2 and "tom's" digital thermometer w probe (6 msgs / 113 lines)

eventually w my next order to SM Ill get the digital thermometer w flexible
probe to keep better track of the temperature of the beans as they roast.
ive found that just as the stage III starts the digital read out on the
machine, that measures air inflow temp shoots right up 'past' my guess for
my particular roast.
Im doing fairly well on color alone as long as I keep the glass on the
container clean.
My question is for someone that uses this probe in this machine: do you
snake the flexible probe through the top around the chaff collector so that
its just a little bit above the bottom of the roasting chamber, in w the
beans?
Im hoping this won't damage the top.
cheers and thanks

You missed an important piece of information...
How are you roasting?

I drilled a hole through the top of the chaff collecter. If you seach the
HomeRoast Digest with "iroast probe" you will find a link with pictures
and instruction. Using a temperature probe is a great modification.

I did something similar. The probe went through one of the holes in
the cap that keeps the chaff ring in. I don't think I had to enlarge
that hole. I did have to enlarge a hole in the chaff collector, but
only a little bit. No real modification was required. It took a little
of practice to get used to dumping the chaff w/o unthreading the
probe.

I performed no permanent modifications - there is a rubber ring
between the top and the glass chamber, which you can pull off - it is
held on by four protruding nubbins that go through four holes in the
roasting chamber top. You can thread the thermocouple wire through
one of those holes, and the other three nubbins will hold the rubber
ring well enough.
So the TC wire goes through a hole in the top of the chaff collector,
then through one of the holes used to retain the rubber ring, down to
just above the floor of the chamber.
