Topic: I'd Like to Start an Argument about P-chem (13 msgs / 471 lines)

Ray,
I don't mean to be pendantic, and I'd rather not debate physical
chemistry on the list, but if you fill a closed container with equal
volumes of CO2 and O2 (regardless of whether there is coffee or not)
they will very quickly mix, and remain mixed.   If your theory were
true, lying on the floor of your basement would cause asphyxiation.

will do this.  Make yourself a black and tan (Guinness draught on top

and see if you still have a nice clear division between the two
layers.

I yield- I certainly have little formal background background in science or
even arithmetic. "pendantic" reminded me of days when I used to spend odd
weekends at my Uncle Charlie's farm at Saunemin, IL. About Sixth grade, I
asked about the "pendantics" of the bulls and goats.
"Well, I don't know, Pat (my nickname)- they must weigh 50 pounds." I felt
fortunate...
Radon gas, one of the daughters of the decomposition of radium, is a very
dense gas. It accumulates in subterranean levels of homes in these parts.
The concentration diminishes by roughly 50% for each floor above the
basement. The evolution of Radon is slow, but builds up in the lowest
levels.
Much Wampum is being spent to mitigate a dense carcinogenic gas that tends
to take up residence in the bottom or subterranean floor of homes. I know
nothing, just follow the money.
Every facet of coffee is a hydrocarbon, a favorite playmate of O2 molecules.
If the CO2 comes across, I'll come across and try to keep it in the basement
with the coffee.

Try again Rayo.  The building up as nothing at all to do with it's 
density.  The gas doesn't magically (or physically I guess) settle 
because it is 'dense'.  Radium, present in the ground, under the 
house, decays into Radon.  This disperses up out of the ground.  If a 
foundation is particularly well sealed, then the gas doesn't escape 
around the house, so has to go up through the house.  The general 
solution for Radon contamination is to open the foundation so the gas 
can do what gases do, and disperse naturally with the atmosphere.

you clean them?  I have wiped them out with paper towels and they appear
clean, but they still have coffee aroma.  I usually do not roast dark enough
to produce oily beans.  Also, when mailing a pound, do the bags have to be
boxed, and has anyone found a source of appropriately sized boxes?
