Topic: Bitch Slap Espresso Blend (21 msgs / 468 lines)
1) From: Mike Chester
I am working on a new espresso blend tentatively named Bitch Slap Blend. It
will be a post roast blend and I am making ver. 1.0 today. I will try:
40% Brazil Formosa DP @ FC 448 eor
25% Bali Kintamani Arabica @ FC 450 eor
20% Yemen Sanani Mocha @FC+ 455 eor
15% Monsooned Malabar @ LV 460 eor
Since this is a post roast blend, I will have extra of all the coffees to
try various ratios.
I have some Ethiopia Organic DP Bonko "Black Sun" and some Brazil Ipanema
"Tree Dry-Process" ordered and will try those in a future version.
Any thoughts on this blend? Ratios? Something missing? Name? Other
ideas?

Mike,
Sounds like a very potent blend, and that may be what you are looking
for. I like the idea of some Ethiopian in there, perhaps in place of
the Bali.
If you have more Monsooned beans to roast, I like a lighter roast; try
stopping @ 450 or bit lower.
Looking forward to hearing how this blend works.
cheers,
Scott

Any reason you're not using any premium robusta? (Makes all the

Like the blend, don't like the name. I am a bit sensitive since I
work with battered women at the hospital. I changed by Brazil to the
Tree Dried Brazil and it have given it a lot more depth and complexity
in my Bugle Blend.. I would not change the Bali to an Ethiopian. The
Yemen will give you the fruit complexity that you want. I think it
should be a winner. Please change the name, it is offensive.

I just enjoyed some L-Amber blend.
This was smoother than I enjoyed this morning. The reservoir was about 110=

in the Crapesso and I started the brew just as the heating thermostat
clicked off. The flavor differences that blossom with changes in roasting,
aging, grinding and brewing the Same Beans... Wow! -ro

Hey, everybody.
After one post from Les, Mike's already agreed to change the name. In
fact he's making a contest of it. It's under another thread and is
being shared by others.
It's done. No need to gang up on him.

Hey Mike,
I hope you do hang in there despite the grousing by some folks. I've seen
this before where somebody was jumped on for some perceived indiscretion.
Then the "me too" bunch piled on and the OP ended up leaving the list.
Don't let it get to you. The whiners are trying to control >you< based on
 >their< feelings. It doesn't matter which side of the issue one is on; it's
a control thing. Last time I checked, though, those 10 amendments to the
constitution were still in effect. I think you've handled the issue with
decorum. Stay with us. Cooler heads will prevail.
Bob

15) From: g paris
Les and all:
clearly I see what the issue was/is but come on; I don't think anyone meant
to be offensive with a coffee blend name.
we could call it "Balls Gone Bad!" or "Nuts on Fire" is anyone going to be
so upset by that? No we are not.
Why? ask yourself. more guys here? too much PC at times? or someone simply
wants to take issue over what is actually is no big deal with a very small
group of people who really are not offended.
I am frankly surprised that there was such an outcry over some "street
language" fora coffee blend. Clearly
no member of this list should feel that another is so violent against
women.We would not be here??@@

There is this to say about that:
Illegitimus non Carborundum
Studying the FAA rules and regs and the AIM / FAR manual made me think of a
new gum I could hand out to the appropriate people. The FAA company. We make
gum.
When my brother was flying something special in the air, I thought I'd like
to apply some of my own Zero Defects attitude to avionics. "With triple
redundancy you don't have to be perfect..." With my Arsch or Bill's at
30,000ft, it better be. Have a stick of gum...

Everyone,
I had hoped that this thread would just quietly die out, but it just keeps
going. I did not want to further respond as it would only continue it, but
I feel that I need to clarify my position.
As I understand the common usage of the phrase, a BS literally is a sharp
slap to the face. It is gender neutral. It can be delivered by a man or a
woman and received by a man or a woman. It does not refer to abuse of
someone weaker. For the record, I am opposed to any violence that is not
absolutely necessary for self defense. It is particularly offensive when
committed against someone weaker such as a child or weaker spouse.
Figuratively, a BS is something shocking or unexpected. There is no actual
physical contact with this meaning. This is the meaning that I was trying
to use.
Like many common phrases used in the US, BS probably has dark roots, but
that is not where I meant to go. The younger generation refers to A shirts
(sleeveless Tee shirts) as "Wife Beaters." This is certainly a more direct
reference to violence, but it still is in common use. In the South, when
someone serves really good food, thy often say that it is "so good that it
makes you want to slap ya' momma." No one accuses them of promoting abuse
of the elderly.
Within a few minutes, of Les pointing out a different interpretation of BS,
I posted an explanation and said I would change the name. I even opened it
up to the list to name my blend as a contest and I have received several
entries. (The deadline is New Years Day so there is still time to enter.
The winner will receive a pound of my final blend) Apparently many people
missed the response as the criticisms continued, followed by defenders of my
political incorrectness. Normally, I try to be slightly PIC, and feel that
PC can be taken too far, but in this case, I can see where someone could
interpret the name literally and feel that it crosses "the line." That is
why I retracted it.
I do appreciate the comments of support that I have received and I have no
intention of leaving the list voluntarily. OTOH, I also appreciate it that
those critical of the name, did not resort to personal attacks. They
criticized what I said, but did not criticize me. I appreciate the maturity
shown.
Now, can we please get back to discussing coffee. I will post my progress
on the yet unnamed blend in a separate post.
Mike Chester
