Topic: First Hot Top roast (2 msgs / 142 lines)
1) From: Ken B
I received the Hot Top today, so of course I had to fire it up. I set
up a table in my garage for roasting, sat down and read the manual and
started my first roast. Here are my initial impressions:
Set up was a breeze. The directions are clear and concise.
The first time I started it up, I knew something was not right...it was
making too much noise. I had to cancel warm up and place the drum back
in it's slot. Easy to hear, easy to diagnose.
I started it on auto and put in 19:30 for the roast, just in case. When
it said add beans, I added 250 grams of Volcancito Don Pepe. I watched
it progress through the window, and it was very easy to see the
different stages.
Now, as someone who has always used either a FR or IR2, I have to say,
it is amazing when you can hear the cracks!!!! I cannot believe how
loud they are, yet are so hard to hear with the air roasters! I allowed
the roast to continue into second crack because I wanted to hear it
(which started at 407 vs the 415 in the book) and let it go until a
rolling second crack, about 15 seconds after first snaps of second. I
then hit eject at approximately 18:10, and viola, Volcancito roasted to
a very nice FC+. I did note that there is considerably more chaff left
on the beans than in the IR2, but that is to be expected I guess. Both
sets of cracks were easy to hear, and I now understand what folks here
mean when they say first is loud, like popcorn, and second is more like
a fireplace or cereal. Heh, it is really nice to be able to KNOW where
the beans are at. It is somewhat annoying to have to hit the enter
button twice during the roast, but in the society we live in today where
everyone wishes to sue for anything, I guess it makes sense.
So, I had to cup the results side by side with some I had roasted to C+
yesterday in the IR2. Totally different coffee's. Even though the
roast was really fresh (like 10 minutes out of the roaster), the
smoothness of the HT roast was more pronounced than the IR2 roast from
yesterday. The IR2 roast did seem to have a bit more character, but I
attribute that to 1) the HT roast was right out of the roaster - no
rest, and 2) the IR2 roast was roasted to a lighter roast level than the
HT roast. It will be very interesting to try this roast tomorrow and
see where it is.
All in all, the HT could not be easier to use. It would be really
simple for a first timer to pick it up, read the book, and roast
coffee. Now comes the fun part of diagnosing the various things it can
do, and finding the sweet spot on it for the various coffee's I enjoy.
Woo-Hoo!
Best Regards,
Ken B
