Topic: New coffee beer (12 msgs / 208 lines)

Well, new to me, at least. I was picking up my father-in-law's Christmas
gift (a case of Youngs Double Chocolate Stout), when I came across Atwater
Block Brewery's Vanilla Java Porter. I had to grab a "try-me" 6, and I'm
quite pleased. The vanilla and coffee flavors are subtle, not
as in-your-face as some others I have had. Maybe it's the strong taste of
the porter, dampening the other two, but the result is, to me, quite
pleasing. I thought I would share my find with the group.

Thanks Seth... you got me thinking.
I was given some Pipeline Porter from Hawaii with Kona Coffee... I didn't
like it at all. I thought that the coffee flavor made it pretty funky, not
smooth and crisp like most porters... I still have 5 to go, so I'll see if
it will grow on me.
Had the "Giddy Up" from New Belgium in Ft. Collins, CO (makers of Fat Tire,
but I know it's not distributed east of the Mississippi. Is it on the West
coast? I dunno...). Anyway, it's infused with espresso and lemon. Not
something that I'd drink a ton of, but definitely a tasty beer. Much better
than the majority of coffee beers I've had.
BTW, Seth, where is Atwater Block Brewery? I guess I could google it, but I
am too lazy...

New Belgium beers are definitely distributed east of the Mississippi.
It's been in the Chicago market for a year or two now. I haven't seen
Giddy Up though but I hadn't been looking for it either. Something I'll
have to look for the next time I'm at a liquor store.

Surly - here in Minneapolis - is about to release their Coffee Bender
[1] in cans.
It's got a very even beer-to-coffee taste ratio - bringing out the
unique characteristics of each.

A very good coffee beer IMO. We get it on draft at several locations here.

Ray your way out #ed here.
IMO coffee can be like a spice if used well. I'm about to offer up enough
coffee for the local micro brewery for a coffee stout. Should be fun.
McMimmimums restaurant "sorry I can't spell" is using coffee with some
dishes on their menu. I heard they roast their own.
Cheers,

I always try to like McMenamins, but everything just seems so mediocre
there. Their food is just okay for the price during happy hour, and I
can't say I'd buy any of their normal beers if they bottled them.
However, every once in a while they have a really killer seasonal, which
means they can make good beer, they just don't normally?
Ah, C'est la vie in beervana.
Me and a couple of buddies do some homebrew here, and we've been getting
together a round up of coffee beers to taste at once to find whats good
in a coffee beer, with the ultimate goal of brewing our own based on my
roasts, of course! And hey, it's an excuse to toss back good beer with
your friends.
Here's what I've got on the shelf waiting for the tasting (I'll be
seeking out the ones mentioned in this thread, but I doubt any of them
are available here on the west coast):
Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout (Already tried one of these, it's pretty weak)
Dieu du Ciel Peche Mortel
Redhook Double Black Stout
Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter
Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout
Rogue Mocha Porter (Had this one before, it's quite good)

We've been enjoying the Lagunitas Cappucino Stout, but it's seasonal, so
they may not have it any more. Lagunitas is a local (to me) brewery, about
20 minutes from my house.
